That's a good one. Oh, you're serious? Is anyone still shooting it? Last I heard the FBI bailed on it.

That's a good one. Oh, you're serious? Is anyone still shooting it? Last I heard the FBI bailed on it. The FBI bailed on it because the recoil was too much for some Agents (Which means women and weaker men-folk couldn't handle the round). It had nothing to do with how effective the round is.

The 10mm has made a surprising comeback in the past 2-3 years. Sig brought out the 220 in 10, Glock rolled out the G40, Colt ramped up Delta Elite production, Dan Wesson re-introduced the Razorback and introduced the Silverback and Bruin, and Springfield is bringing out an a Operator model in 10mm later this year.

So .40s suck? Had a Glock .45 but sold it because I never shot it.

.40 is not a bad round, but in comparison to its parent cartridge (10mm), it isn't even in the same class. The .40 S&W became the darling of law enforcement in the '90s due to the facts that:
1) It fit into 9mm sized firearms 2) Lower recoil than the 10mm 3) Larger bore diameter (a whopping 1mm larger than 9mm....) 4) Higher capacity than .45 ACP handguns 5) Glock was practically giving the model G22 & G23 away to police departments 6) It was the first major handgun cartridge designed specifically for hollow-point ammunition and all the ammo manufacturers used it to push their latest designs 7) It became the FBI's chosen round
Interestingly, with the recent improvements in terminal bullet performance, the 9mm has made a significant comeback in law enforcement in recent years. The .40 has a rather nasty habit of wearing out guns significantly faster than the 9mm (the slide velocity of the .40 is quite a bit higher) and the "sharpness" of the recoil has proven detrimental to accuracy who rarely practice. Not only is the 9mm typically easier to shoot accurately, the same sized firearm will usually hold 2-3 more rounds due to the smaller cartridge, the ammunition is less expensive, and terminal performance with the latest generation of ammunition is within a couple of percentage points.
I own, and carry, 9mm, .40, .45 ACP, .357 Mag, and even .45 Colt handguns just depending upon my outfit, the time of year, what I'm going to be doing that day, and what jurisdiction I'm headed to or will be passing through. I'm currently without a 10mm and I'm looking to correct that fairly soon.

That is a lot of good info, thanks. I am always looking to learn more about firearms. I have pretty basic knowledge as of right now. I basically chose my .40 because my .45 was too big to carry, for my liking. So I just decided to go with the .40 rather than the 9mm. And I liked splitting the difference of having extra capacity (to a .45) along with what I assumed is a harder hitting bullet than the 9mm. But yes, my friend has the same Xd as I do but the 9mm and I am more accurate with the 9mm.

Is Springfield making a 10 mm XD or 1911? It will be their 1911 Combat Operator. They are currently making it in 9mm, then they will make runs in .45 and 10mm for Lipsey's:

All the local police agencies issued them and my thought was that basically having the same firearm and cartridge as the local agencies would make both logistics, and a more easily legally defensible case if I were to have to use it. One thing to keep in mind about the .40 is that it typically has the same muzzle energy as the .45 ACP and nobody complains about that cartridge's lack of power.

I have definitely noticed the slide velocity and "wear and tear" aspect on our weapons though. The Gen4 replacements we purchased a few years ago GREATLY improved recoil issues for both of us and improved our groupings. In the interest of ammo storage/usage consolidation, I recently ordered a carbine that chambers the .40 since i have read several good articles about the 40 cal performance from increased barrel length/rifling and look forward to a visit to the range in another week or so.

Here is another one of my kids (before the boating accident). Norinco SKS. It was the only semi auto rifle I could buy that fit my budget when I lived in California. Since then it has become something of a project gun. At one point it was all tacticool and would take detachable magazines. I modified the bolt so that you could remove the magazine with the bolt closed. You can't do that with a standard SKS. Now it is back to its original look. The one thing I have done to it that I'm very proud of was to cut and crown the barrel. It is now 16.5 inches long and a damn easy gun to handle. Still puts a 3 inch group at 100 yards so that is plenty good for me. I also moved the front sight base back about 4 inches after the barrel chop. i.imgur.com/cCFXRfy.jpgi.imgur.com/EZjo73J.jpg

Get your parents to buy it. I could do that, but I'm literally 18 in one and a half months, May 2nd and that's around when I get the money for it.
