It's new "to me" gun day! I've been looking for a pre-lock 4" Smith 686 for a few years but never found one that was both in good condition and in my acceptable price range. Until today. This one is next to new (doesn't even have a turn-ring on the cylinder!) and cost me exactly nothing! It seems my habit of helping sell firearms and accessories at the local gun store caught the owner's attention. They've been open for a year next week and I've probably sold 30+ guns for them on my days off and online. So when he saw me looking at this, he said to consider it my commission check! On top of it all, this is a rare version. 7-shot pre-lock with a square-butt and first year of production for this variant. Do you work at the shop, or do you just go there enough to shoot the breeze they trust you to help give out good info on what they have for sale? Either way, can't beat a free gun. Especially not one you've been looking for

Especially not one you've been looking for I live less than 5 miles from this particular shop and hit it probably once a week just to shoot the breeze and browse the latest merchandise. I've been a shooter pretty much all my life and spent a decade selling firearms, so it comes as second nature to help out. Heck, the owner has even asked me to take another customer back to the safe to look at the special selections he doesn't keep on the shelf. They've offered me a part-time job (weekends) but my schedule is so random that it wouldn't be fair to them for me to take it. This store is doing it right and I really want to see it succeed, so I'm happy to help when I can. The reward was completely unexpected and I'm still stunned.

Ouch. That's a tough one. I like both Leupold and Vortex. Looks like they are about $120 apart for the illuminated Leupold reticle version.
Personally I like the SPR reticle in the Leupold better than the Vortex's and I like the non-capped turrets for adjustments. That said, the 6x power, and the $120 savings are very nice on the Vortex.
If the price was the same (a.k.a. money no object) I'd buy the Leupold strictly on the reticle preference.

I like the true 1x on the Vortex and the 6x maximum magnification.
The Loopy I was comparing it to is more expensive...
Might just have to go with the Vortex.
That $120 can get me a small case of M855.

Might have a change of plans.
I found a guy selling a Sig MCX in 5.56 so I sent him a message asking if he'd trade for my Ruger SR762.
I would put the Vortex on that one instead.
Or, if I like the Vortex enough, I'll just buy another for the M&P and make it a truck gun.

It's so cute!
I'm meeting up with a guy tomorrow to trade my Ruger SR 762 for his DSA SA58 FAL.
I'll post pics tomorrow.
My other DSA will finally have a sibling.

I like that Vortex sight you posted, but the wife gave me strict orders to not spend any more money on this for a while. I might be able to get away with buying an extra magazine or two next month, but that's probably it for a while.

Just watch for sales, especially around Christmas or (Kinda late) Black Friday and pick up the 10 packs of pmags.

Ever fancied a British L1A1 SLR?? I've fired several FALs, but never an actual L1A1. Bizarrely they are "legal" in the UK as they are only a single shot weapon. Just a case of finding one that hasn't been demilled and doesn't have rotting or woodwormed furniture.
