I get that people are going to play this tank because of its historical relevance even if it isn't good. So barring that, let's talk about it.
Its not a good medium.
It's kind of a medium trying to be a TD, except it doesn't do that all that well.
The gun:
This is the only part of the vehicle worth mentioning from a beneficial perspective. The penetration is top class for the tier and type and the damage is nice. The pen is 171 and the damage is 150. This can be compared to the standard American Sherman's that use the M1A2 76mm. The American Sherman's have 128 penetration and do 115 damage. However, the American shermans fire much better on the move and have a much higher rate of fire. The DPM is a bit worse due to the RoF difference. The Firefly gets about ~1950 DPM while the E8 gets about ~2150 DPM.
The armor:
There isn't any. Turret mantlet is only potential bounce zone.
The Mobility:
I'm guessing that Wargaming thought this would be OP if they gave it the Easy Eight's mobility or something, because they made it far more sluggish than the other comparable Sherman's barring the Jumbo. The tank maxes out at 36kph and won't hit it as quickly as comparable tanks. The Easy Eight maxes out at 48kph and has a power to weight of ~17.5/t while the Firefly has a PW of 13.82/t .
TL: DR, the Firefly gets more pen than an E8 and more damage per shot plus the gun is a bit more accurate but sacrifices in every other area to do so. It's not worth getting unless (*Jab*) you're a British fanboy like Sqn Ldr B (*Jab*) or something.

I think that gun will be enough for many players to get the tank and enjoy it, plus, like you said, historical value. I will probably play this line slowly like I'm doing with their new TDs. I don't think tanks have to be wonderful in comparison to others to be enjoyable. Great info to have though. Thank you, and well written.

It's just a medium tank so people like it. Any other tier 8 tech tree Med is probably better. Also, I literally just posted stats to back up my claims. Everything said in the post is factual besides my opinion of the tank. |

What I don't understand are people that pigeonhole themselves into only tanks they deem "good." As if it's against the rules to have fun with anything other than the game's most OP tanks. There's something to be said about having a good time in this game no matter what you us. I get he feeling sometimes that some people consider their Win8 before anything else when playing WoT.

It's too sluggish to be a proper medium, and lacks the armor of the Jumbo. I might get it to try it, but that lack of mobility just kind of puts me off.

Preaching to choir in my case...I have about 100 tanks in garage and about 30 open slots. I like the variety and challenge of trying/working different tanks. |

Same thing with the Type 59. I bought it and I like it a lot. Sure it has short comings, but if you play like you have a brain you can generally mitigate those weaknesses.

That is my absolute favorite part of this game, and the only thing that keeps it fresh for me. Using the difficult/medium tanks, and making them work. The only people to whom this doesn't seem enjoyable are people who are more concerned about farming WN8 so they can stick their stats in their signature and participate in threads about being purple. You have to wonder what their WN8's would look like if they didn't abuse the fuck out of the easiest to use/OP tanks in the game. But then, who cares at all. I don't understand why people can't play games for fun anymore. Seems most folk's enjoyment any more is derived from stats. Stats which mean nothing. |

The second was on the Type 59, in which its debatable if I was right or not, but I still believe the T59 to be a mediocre vehicle that gets love because it's cheap and is a tier VIII Premium med, of which there are few of. The third is the Firefly, and I doubt I am wrong here. The only advantage the Firefly brings to the table is that it has pen and alpha and maybe accuracy, that's it. |

It seems people who are not purple misinterpret the amount of care purples actually give for being purple. Almost every purple I've talked to is just good at the game. They don't play different tanks to "maintain" their stats. They don't avoid "bad" tanks for the sake of their stats. Some, like me, avoid shit tanks because they're shit. Why would I want to play a terrible to mediocre tank if I have great tanks or at the least charismatic tanks I could be playing? For example, I consider the M48 Patton and Fv4202 to be "charismatic" in the way that they are cool tanks that are fun to play that just aren't good. Your definition of what is "good" and/or "charismatic" might vary but everyone does this as far as I'm aware. You don't need to slander better (Better as in, blue, purple, etc, not better than yourself, this is not a dig.) players because they don't play the tanks you would. And before you say it, yes, saying all a player cares about is their stats is not a good thing to say to someone. |
