I had this same, insane conversation with my liberal Long Island idiot neighbor.  He's an idiot, in general, not just for what I'm about to say here.

When he moved in 2 years ago, I made neighborly and talked to him, introduced myself and my wife, shared a little bit - you know, neighborly chit-chat.  Told him where I've lived in life and why I like living in South Carolina so much.  Many reasons, but one was that this really is still a free state, for the most part.  

He goes off on the high cost of living in NY and specifically NYC / Long Island, and how he can afford to do so much more down here, because even thought the Charleston area has a higher cost of living, it is much better than many places in NY and New England (I listen to my bro and sis-in-law go off on CT taxes all the time).

Then, he starts talking about not having this service or that service - why we need more mass transit and laws to restrict this and that, blah blah blah.  I looked him square in the eye and said, "Doesn't sound like you're making the connection between the high taxes and cost of living in NY and the reasons behind said costs."

He just stopped dead in his tracks and looked at me like I was crazy.  I told him that if he gets to the point where he desires all of those things, policies, laws, politicians, etc that led to those high costs, he's free to load up the UHaul and move his family back to NYC.  

To this day, he still hasn't made the connection.

If people didn't look at McDonalds as fucking career choice they wouldn't be crying for $15 an hour to do what amounts to extremely low skilled labor.

( .AreerNa)We we are seeing the result of decades of relative prosperity and entitlement. a sizable percentage of people have been so fortunate (relatively) that the work ethics of previous generations are now forgotten.
That and decades of isolating our children has led to unprepared humans entering higher education/work life.

Don't get me wrong as a generally liberal voter ( British liberal, not extreme socialist liberal) i believe that society should have basic standards and protection for it's people ( mandated living wage/min wage /national health service) but the populace needs to uphold its responsibilities too. And part of that is education and expectation. In the UK our higher education is becoming devalued because we sold everyone a lie that "everyone can go to university,get a degree and get a career" which is bollocks. Everyone should have the opportunity to go to university if they can achieve the correct standard of academic achievement. instead we have a system where universities don't care, as long as they get money.

please expand ( i believe that unregulated and uncontrolled profiteering as typified by unregulated capitilism is bad, and leaves our nation's open to economic warfare. Because most companies are never going to think about the ramifications of their actions beyond profit /loss and their immediate competitors.)
