I've been waiting a long time for a new doom after 3 and had almost given up hope. I was concerned that it was going though development hell. I also worried when I heard it was essentially a reboot of the franchise. I was wrong.
Smooth, gory, and frenetic are three words I'd use to describe this game. Deep and story driven are not. The controls are smooth, the weapon selection is great; the ability to mod weapons via pickups is also a neat aspect to the game.
Ive been having a blast with this game. It is the very definition of a mindless rampage through hordes of enemies with just a bit of story so you kind of know what's going on but nothing to get in the way of demon slaughter fest 2016. Not even paltry needs such as reloading your weapon or trying to figure out what two weapons you want will get in your way here you can carry every weapon with you at all times again, as per Doom of old. But really none of the previous entries were in any way story driven so that's kind of a given.
I'm thinking of moving up the difficulty a bit just, because it feels so easy compared to previous entries. Killing enemies grants a bit of health and sometimes ammo. Glory kills (basically finishing moves done on weakened enemies) also grants more health than regular kills. I'm not too sure how far in I am but either I am better than I remember or it's too easy at medium difficulty once you figure out the rhythm of shoot, weaken, tear apart enemy to gain more health, repeat.
Id say if you fondly remember the old games, you will like this. If you enjoy a good mindless bloody romp through hell and just want to kill all the things, you will like this. But if you prefer your shooters with more story or depth to its combat mechanics look elsewhere. I personally am in love with it.
