So I been on the War Thunder forum for a couple weeks now and I kinda get your point. While most people on there are genuinely trying to help, the mods do get pretty bent if you suggest any thing is wrong with their precious forum. Big fish in little pond etc.

Is there a trick to setting up Custom battles with both tanks and planes on WT? I can do it for aircraft only, but it's not letting me add tanks. Do I need to complete a certain number of tank battles before I can set up matches? Seems like I heard that somewhere...
I posted this question a couple days ago on the WT forum but got zero response, big surprise

I'm sure there is something you can do with setting up a custom battles that allows planes and tanks at the same time. Have no idea how to do it though fly.

I'll try playing a few more tank battles and see if I can unlock something. I haven't played much tanks on War Thunder as I prefer WoT for tanks and WT for planes, but I thought a custom battle combining the 2 might be pretty cool.

I do believe that Tank Realistic Battles are the ones where you can use tanks and aeroplanes. You can't get an aeroplane straight off from the beginning, they cost more spawn points than you have at the beginning, so you've got to play a tank for a bit to earn some more and then when you die you can respawn in an aeroplane. I don't know how custom battles would work, but I assume it would be the same.

Making progress. I just had to play a few more tank matches and buy a tank to unlock the option in custom battles, It wouldn't let me do it with just the reserve tanks. Seems like that would be written somewhere but whatever.
What I'm trying to do now is build a custom match where I can alternate between planes and tanks when I get shot down or blowed up (which happens a lot). Right now it lets me spawn in planes if I turn off the Air Battles mode, but it won't let me switch back to tanks. If I have Air Battles Mode "On" I can switch from tank to plane if I score enough points, but only for a few seconds at a time. Seems like I've seen YouTubes where guys switch from plane to tank and vicey-versa almost at will, that would be a fun way to practice both. Is that a game mode that I'm not seeing?

Here's one of the vids I was talking about:
He swaps to a tank by landing at an airport, hitting the bail-out key while on the ground, and then re-spawning in a tank. When I try it w PS4 I'm limited to planes if I started in planes, and tanks if I started in tanks. Having the option to swap between Air and Ground forces would be a pretty neat feature for Custom games, is it possible?

I finally figured it out. You start a ground battle with 5 crew slots, and you can still put an airplane in those slots even though it says "Army". That's what was throwing me off, I thought you had to put a ground vehicle in there  The good thing is that if you die in a Custom match (with Air Battle Mode switched off) you can re-spawn in any one of those 5 vehicles, Ground or Air no points needed! Yaay! Things are slowly getting better over there, some of the old Birds of Steel people are starting to show up and they are waaay more helpful than WT folk. |

Personally I think it looks subpar to say the least. At least the attention to detail is there I suppose, but it wouldn't be WT if it wasn't there.
