As I'm reading news posts about multi-gun tanks able to now fire and "reforged" buffs/nerfs that have come 3-4 years too late, I'm reminded of just how much this game has changed - and mostly not for the better. The closure of the Forums is probably the biggest gut-punch for me and has signaled that WGCB has taken a rather hostile approach to criticism and proper feedback response.
The community is a shell of its former self, now divided between a WW2 mode that's barely recognizable and a Cold War mode that was not only unwelcome by the community, but has been pretty much an abject failure on WGCB's behalf. Most of the game's content creators have left the game, with some remaining ones uploading videos so scarcely that they could barely be qualified as active channels. The playerbase quality has reached levels so diabolically bad that it's made us question the intelligence of the average F2P player.
I must ask: where do you think WoT Console started its descent? To me, I think the game was in a slight (but barely concerning) decline from late 2016 until around late 2017. You know, we had some poor decisions like the Black Friday Fiasco, the Comic Mode mode that burned peoples' eyes out, and the infamous Fatherland Op. Other than that, it was still a very enjoyable and healthy game. But in early 2018, WGCB, for whatever reason, decided to take the then-current mantra of "we're not PC" to heart, and implemented what I think was the catalyst for this game's downfall - the Mercenaries rebrand. From there, we got increasingly annoying and mind-boggling stupid decisions like Update 4.6, Mech Mode, WWE and HotWheels collabs, etc. And now we're here.
What do you all think?

I’m thinking you are pretty spot on with your analysis of the brand’s decline. So really it’s been rather gradual but there are the low lights you’ve mentioned. The early shenanigans were annoying at times but Mercenaries was the real tipping point for me. Cartoony tanks, and the goofy commanders they keep pushing even today. It’s only gotten proportionally worse over time. 6.0 was a disaster and they’ve mostly “fixed” things by going back to some semblance of the old game. Season Ops that miss the Mark of the veteran player base, right up to now with the “Grizzly” bear (I’m guessing) on the opening screen shots? It looks kinda like an angry gopher. I suppose that closing the Forum shouldn’t have been a surprise since so many really good contributors were either banned forever over a relatively minor offense, or walked away never to return. But even as a shadow of it’s possible self it was the only real good place to get honest feedback and actual advice for years. Just another brick in the wall.

There are some folks who think the game started in the wrong direction with the first earn Op, the Motherland T-44. Maybe. I’m not convinced it was the best move but in hindsight, it hadn’t been the worst. The Fatherland lottery was absolutely terrible, due to some players getting it in a ridiculously low number of games and then other players playing 100’s of games without completing it. There are other decisions, some of which you have covered, that weren’t the best, looking back. I think the first rebranding of the game, WOT Mercenaries, was the single thing that told me the OG player base was no longer the focus and it continued on a downward slope in my opinion. Map rotation, or more precisely, a lack of rotation, led to a great deal of frustration from players. Other things, in no particular order, were balance issues, Arty, MM, etc. When it came time for the Black Friday premium sale of 2020, I declined to get the year at half price. I didn’t like True Vision and was concerned it would become part of the mechanics. Then 6.0 dropped and it made the decision for me. I was done
I know there are other issues folks had with the game, +1/-1 and platoons, but I didn’t have problems with those things

I think that’s where the game began the “gradual” point of its decline. The Op was incredibly successful - not because it was a good Op, but because players also had the option of whipping out mommy’s and daddy’s credit card and just buying the tank in the store outright. I don’t think WGCB was expecting the tank to sell as well as it did and they realized they were sitting on a potential gold mine. They pretty much figured out they could get away with getting the most profit for the least amount of effort, which then explains the parade of reskins we’ve been getting ever since. It was that lack of effort that soon evolved into greed. But I will agree that Mercenaries was the tipping point and the game’s decline went from a gradual slope into a total nosedive.

I heard quite a few players, when the Motherland Op was announced, say that premium tanks had just been devalued. If WG was giving them away, why buy one?

About 2016 is pretty accurate. At the time I was active on both console and PC. In late 2015 the dude at WG HQ that was in charge of overseeing and making sure there was parity between the WG tanks titles decided it was too much work and cut the respective dev teams loose to do as they wish. I'm not going to dig and find it again but anyone interested there is an existing archived news article on the PC main portal covering this decision, I think it's from Dec. ish time frame. This timing also roughly coincides with Pain God setting up his own personal head developers corner on the forums and then getting absolutely smashed after one of the unpopular decisions he made. After that the forum became the official black sheep and the erroneous crackdowns on vocal forum members began. Valor looked like things were going to swing back on track but then they didn't.

I’ll never understand why Valor was the way it was. I mean, it finally ended Mercenaries and brought us hope with the 360 being dropped, crossplay coming that summer, and tank fixes taking place. But as soon as the 360 was dropped and crossplay was enabled, we were hit with fucking WWE - something we weren’t even told about until the DAY BEFORE the update. All the positive potential we had with Valor was wasted and we still don’t know exactly why.

Completely this. The Motherland OP was the Titanic spotting the iceberg, but Mercenaries was when they hit it.

For me it was when they started making premiums better than TT tanks after they said the purpose of premium tanks was for XP and silver earning, followed by the Mercs. Those two didn't really sap my enjoyment too much, but 6.0 was a dumpster fire. I still play, but very little...76 battles in the last month.

Premium tanks, mostly tier 8, became the primary focus. Nothing wrong with coming out with new premiums but when there is no effort to make the game better overall, it’s a wasted effort in my opinion

Last time I played I actually got mad to the point of shaking. Had 10 sub 5 minute roflstomp losses in a row. Will play again sometime but see no reason to play a so called game that's in the state it's in. Yes I know it all balances out and I've been on worse bad streaks before. What got me was the quality of gameplay. I legit think there is something wrong with how RNG is being applied to the teams confounding how bad the average player is now.

I am a newbe, starting in 2018, so Mercs were in. Old Xbox going ok, cross play why not. BUT Downgrade 6.0 ! WTF??? They took away things we liked and gave things no one asked for or wanted. I still remember l couldn't see anything for weeks .

I turned the game off for 60+ days until they reverted a bunch of stuff from 6.0. I've shifted my focus on how I view the game and what I want out of it...I don't grind anymore outside of a tank I specifically want to play. I've gone back and grabbed a few tanks I really didn't play much and I've grabbed a handful to 3-mark and get to 100%. And I'm trying to get to 100M silver....at 64M now.

The game was on the decline for me from the motherland op. I gradually played less and less until the drop of 6.0 where all passion and desire to play the game ended abruptly. There were so many premiums and new tanks in the game with random crazy names and whatnot that it was impossible to know what you were fighting and where to shoot it. Half the time I learned a particular tank was added to the game when I came across it on the battlefield. The proliferation of premium ammo too, negating most armour.
I still liked to play my ISU-152, my favourite tank in that game, but when they nerfed that too it pushed me further from the game. Near the end I only really played my T92 and my Jageroo. Occasionally the Dreadnought (perfect example of pay to win premium being outright better in every single way than the tank it was based on)
6.0 was the shot to the back of the head for my desire to play WoT console. They changed so much in a single patch that I had no idea where anything was in my garage after playing the game for 7 straight years. The tech tree was a mess and the captain skill crap too. I hated the new UI. I knew after playing 5 games of the new system that I would put it down and never play it again.
I've installed it once since that time and played 3 battles in my T92, realised that my hopes for it to return to a fun game were in vain and uninstalled it for one final time.

I think it really stared heading south late 2016 I had about a year in at that time. From then until mercs in 2018 it was kind of a slow decline to me there were problems but once mercs dropped it just nose dived from there. Mercs could have been ok but they went way over the top with it. But the pay to win stuff, countless reskins, complete lack in balance, nerfing the earnings in proving ground and war stories, game modes no one wanted like mechs, and changing policies like the exception policy change( big F**k you to the player base) really hurt the game. I have not played any in a few months since my xbox one died and have been on the fence about buying another console to try tanks again. WOT and WOWs legends were the only modern games I played really, so I just hooked the 360 up use it some but mostly I play retro stuff. I quit WOWS legends before the xbox died, but I do miss tanks for some strange reason and honestly if I get a chance to pick up a used xbox console for cheap I would try it again.
