Ok so I’m not gonna bother actually hating an inanimate pixel but it does seem that Arty more than any other class draws a lot of negative attention both on the battlefield and on social media. But why do you not like Arty? Is it the sudden death by a guy hiding in the back just clicking away? The feeling that it takes no skill? For me it gets around to the fact I get little joy or satisfaction playing that class. If I’m in a hot mix up of mediums, a running fight with Red lights, or duking it out in heavy weights I’ll get a heart pumping rush when things get intense. It’s so much fun, and keeps me coming back even tho my physical dexterity is diminishing. So my hands hurt after playing lights too much, or the faster mediums too. Arty is easiest on my hands, but there’s no passion in it for me. I still play it without mercy, but I do not often get that same adrenaline rush I can get from a well played round in any other type. I’ve had a couple positive experiences playing Arty but mostly I’m just going through the motions. Still, I don’t play it very much because why bother if I’m not really having fun? Damn, then why the hell do I bother with it? Guess I don’t have an answer for that one.

I played the majority of my games in arty back when I played. A lot of people give it stick because they remember that one time they got one shot while moving but the reality is arty is an exercise in frustration for the receiver and the user. The class is almost entirely team and luck dependent. Bad team; one or both of your flanks collapses and you're screwed. Missed 5 shots in a row? You're screwed. Unless you get a lucky shot there isn't much you can do to help your team. Higher tiers especially were very aggravating. Apart from a couple outliers most high tier arty have terrible aim times, accuracy and glacial reloads with ridiculously high operating costs. Combine with only ever getting half xp for the damage you deal and the huge xp requirements for unlocks and it's a huge grind with little to no pay off. Conversely, there are a few arty that are just easy mode, like the Sexton II(US) which is just point and click. WG just never knew how to balance it properly and it shows.

I got into arty probably 5,000 battles in to the game. I found it to be much less stressful than playing a normal tank. If I was having a rough day in regular tanks I'd play some arty games to unwind a bit and mess around.
I ground the American line to the T92 and that was my arty of choice. Load prem high explosive, aim for clusters of tanks and drop nukes. I'd win and I'd lose and for a mediocre player like me that was mainly out of my control.

Im the anomaly because I actually enjoy arty and have from the start. I enjoy it on my team - No render range to hinder my assists. I enjoy it on the enemy team - Mission objective updated. I enjoy playing it - Counter battery, proper flank support and shinanegans I enjoy shooting it - Aint much sweeter than munchin on dat juicy arty booty. I even like it shooting at me - more time shooting at me is less time shooting at my tater team. I build my stuper heavies for defense and its hilarious how many arty shots can and will miss a giant slow blumbering target. I may not do so well so often but when there are several enemies taking several minutes just to kill little ol me seems to make a positive difference a lot of times. Everyones problem is they have too much pride and not enough humility. They cant accept defeat and die with dignity and honor these days and fall too quick to judge and cast blame on anything else for their loss other than themselves. Being super offended by anything is too powerful as some sort of meta social behavior. Suck it up, buttercup. You died so it's time to move on! Arty aint fair and never was supposed to be. It was made with the game and doesnt need too much more change, if any, anymore. They still dont put up decently consistant numbers to make significant differences. Ive rarely seen any arty break 4k and most do 1500-3k. It seems odd how accuracy and stuff can be optimized more than it could before yet I still miss those seemingly guaranteed shots so often... Then again I am the WoT anomaly and play this game differently than everyone else. Especially you sweaty butt nuggets

I think that people hate arty because they remember the one-shots, but they don't remember (or even notice) the misses. That leaves the impression that arties are incredibly powerful, and one-shot at least a dozen tanks per game.
Look at the avg. damage (Wotinfo, last 30 days, PS4): The best tank at tier X has 131% of the best arty's damage, at tier IX it's 138%, at tier VIII it's 126%. Sorted by avg. damage, the best arties are placed at #44 out of 57 at tier X, #21/56 at tier IX and #41/147 at tier VIII. Numbers for MoE look even more bleak for arties.
Arties are very ineffective, and make a lot less damage than all other classes except lights.
Myself, I play them occasionally (6.7% of my games). They miss a lot, and that makes them far too frustrating to play them more than that. They are few exceptions: The FV304 is by far the funnest arty in the game. Sticking to the back is not an option, the range of the gun is so short that you have to place yourself close to the main line. You are much more involved in what's going on in the game, and you have the speed to make it work.

I can understand why highly competive players and low skilled players hate artillery. For competive player it feels unfair when they can't control everything in the game and they also feel that it's cheating when someone they consider low skill takes them out with lucky shot. For low skilled players it feels frustrating and hard to understand why they get hit repeatedly when he sits in his favorite spot. Still, presence of indirect fire increases battle difficulty level and brings in random uncontrolled events. These uncontrolled events give a feeling of fake danger and increases tension in the battle making it feel less boring.

I think one of the issues with that is most players are average/below-average so they end up camping behind rocks the whole game. Wasn't much way to encourage them to move up.
