When I started playing after a brief period with Arty I played TDs and nothing else. I'm not a good player and it took me a while to get the hang of them. Yes many of them are easier to play than Mediums and yes many have seriously good firepower but on WOT XB we suffer from a serious lack of bush. This means that one of the the TDs' main advantages, camo is compromised.
On many maps, TDs can be challenging to run. Many are fixed turret and so are not as flexible to use as other types of tank. They often don't have the depression of other tanks, so have to pull out over a hill to fire, rather than just peak over and fire. They often have long reload times (not all though of course) so are not great at brawling.
There are a lot of comments and complaints about TDS such as the Waffle and Deathstar being OP, and this may be the case at the top tiers, but in the mid tiers, I'm not so sure TDs rule at all. Yes tanks like the ISU 152 can do ridiculous damage but it's touch and go as to whether it does, depending on how the battle goes, what the team is like and which map it's on.
So I moved to Mediums and while the damage they do per shot is generally less, their DPM is often very good, and with rotating turrets, decent depression and their flexibility they can do well on all maps. Some have excellent view range and even decent camo. This in my opinion makes them a better class of tank overall.
There are of course exceptions in all of this, but we never see people complaining about Mediums whereas with TDs we see people complaining all the time.
What do you think though, do you think that the complaints about TDS are just a 'storm in a teacup' or is there a genuine issue here? Are TDs as awesome as they're made out to be or are Mediums the true dominators of the battlefield?

I think it's mostly a high tier problem and that they are not necessary better but at least at tier X, feels like more damage and kills for less effort than with other classes.
I don't have any of the really famous OP tier X td's but even with a lower alpha one like the Obj 263 it feels really easy to consistently do damage. While i can do the same damage in mediums and heavies, it takes a lot more moving around and taking risks.
Part of the problem is tanks that gives pretty bad players the opportunity to just yolo and get a kill, something that is harder without high alpha or the waffle's high pen and great accuracy auto loader.
The big selling point for mediums is the ability to cover the map better by being able to relocate, while having good enough firepower to secure important locations until the big guns arrive.
The ability to be able to rush back from the front, reset the cap and get back is very valuable for a player who wants to win.

To be fair most of the complaints about TDs are about those in higher tiers. As you say though the flexibility of Mediums makes for a better chance of changing the course of the battle.

Nothing I hate more than trying to run my Centurion I in a tier X match. I literally have nothing going for me. Just hide and hope I don't get spotted by the Waffle or Obj. 268. The biggest problem I have with the high tier TDs is their view range. Nerf that, and I think the field levels out for the most part.

Yeah, the lower tier TDs are mostly balanced. It's the tier Xs that are the problem.

The only TDs I really dislike are the tier X ones. And it's because unlike at all the other tiers they mostly have the best of everything. Great armor, accurate guns, high pen, high damage, good camo, great view ranges. And some are even amazingly mobile for their size. I can deal with them having the amazing guns as that's what they're there for. And armor is usually historical or what was planned so that's okay too. But them also having maxed out view ranges means they don't actually need any other tanks to spot for them and with the good camo even when they're big as a house means they can stay hidden to do it.
No tank should be great at everything in the game, it kind of defeats the point of it being a team game.
