Why has this game ballooned up to 72gigs? Is this all due to CW mode? The 3D dollies? TJ's (refuse to use his idiotic game tag) god ray/color filter/tree detail obsession? Inefficient coding? I mean PC is only 83gigs to start or so if i remember right and at least looks a whole lot better than this turd.

I was going to say the file size used to be even worse (was it limited on Xbox 360?), however I don't know if 6.0 was necessarily when compression of assets began. I remember it being closer to the Mercenaries era. It may have happened some more along the way.
A lot of this modern gaming is much the same lately with it's file weight unfortunately. It's part of the reason why I tend to like Indie games more and more. Even with all of WoT's file size issues, I still can't ever recall it taking as long to install as say, a Master Chief Collection Update.

I don't think there was ever a limit to file size for the game other than the physical limitations of the 360 only having up to a 256GB hard drive available, or that lie they told about the 6GB limit or whatever it was. discreetgrape Video files and high res textures are the most common reasons the game would have ballooned, but from I can tell the game still looks pretty meh despite finally killing off dinosaur support and they removed all the cutscene stuff from War Stories. The 3D commanders probably take up a lot of space, and I imagine that them being the WoTC team they are just as incompetent as ever and don't understand file compression. It's way more likely the devs are just incompetent rather than the game actually needing that much space. It could also be preemptively reserving more space than it needs on the HD for future updates, so the game might only be 50GB but holds and extra 20GB for future proofing. My personal theory is that instead of just adding the Cold War tanks and making them unavailable in the "WWII mode" they literally copy pasted the entire game and just changed what tanks were available, so you basically have 2 separate games installed in one big package.

I'm thinking some of the bloat is bad coding. I doubt they optimize the textures well and no telling how bad that UI is since they recoded it.
Definitely would agree the 3D commanders are a wasting space. They have to add animations to them also
