I'd like to find a book that deals with the subject of going through disappointment, difficulties, hard stuff, etc. I'm dealing with a lot of stuff in my personal life that is just making me sick. I need to get a handle on it. I thought getting invested in a book might help. It can be any kind of book really--biographical, historical, memoir, manga. Not really looking for anything along the lines of self-help. But mainly something where you would see a real or fictional character's experience through painful stuff.
And honestly, I'm open to other themes besides that. I just thought something like that might help. Mainly I'd like to find something interesting that will keep my attention for awhile.

They aren't selfhelp books but I emjoyed them. The new Steven King books Mr Mercedes and Finder's Keepers are really good, there's a third book to that series I haven't read yet. Its kind of a detective crime stopper thriller theme. Then there's the Stephen Hunter books. The Bob Lee Swagger nocels along with the Earl Swagger books are good action packed shoot 'em up one man army style books. Clive Cussler writes action novels that usually have an ocean Theme with Dirk Pitt and are based around a historical artifact that was lost in some wreck in the past with a james bond like enemy to beat. Hope that helps.

Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. He was a Roman Emperor and his book is of his reflections on life. If you like fantasy, the Witcher series, The Way of Kings, A Wise Man's Fear, and A Game of Thrones are all great.

Into Thin Air by Charles Krakaur...about an Everest expedition that doesn’t go as planned. He has some other good books as well.

The Medic: Miracle on Hacksaw Ridge by Adam Palmer Story of Desmond Doss. A Film Documentary is about too, titled "the Conscientious Objector" www.imdb.com/title/tt0302427/ Hollywood made a movie called Hacksaw Ridge. A Fortunate Life by Albert Facey Autobiography early to mid 20th Century Australian. Hopefully not too preachy with this. You mentioned you are a person of Christian Faith elsewhere on this board. The Christian Bible is full examples of trials, tribulations and challenges. I spoke to an LDS congregation a couple of years back on Enduring to the end and overcoming adversity. Apart from the Scriptural stuff, I spoke a bit about Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition 1914-1917. If you googled Shackleton and 1914-1917 Antarctic expedition, you will likely get a decent overview of what went down. A good book which goes into so much more detail is: Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing. Living Well Despite Adversity: Inspiration for Finding Renewed Meaning and Joy in Your Life by Harriet Cabelly. A collection of interviews. I haven't read this one either. But the comments suggest it might be worth a look. “A must-read for anyone who's feeling discouraged or hopeless. If you're going through a hard time, or know someone who could use a little inspiration to carry on, Living Well Despite Adversity will brighten the light at the end of the tunnel.” — Lori Deschene, Founder of tinybuddha.com and author of Tiny Buddha’s Gratitude Journal “Moving, inspiring and heart-felt. The stories in this book show it’s possible to deal with hardship and rise above adversity.” — Tal Ben-Shahar, author of Happier; lecturer and author in the field of positive psychology If you're after a fictional, there's plenty of them but if you like classic fantasy, R Salvatore's novel's featuring Drizzt might be worth a read - something like 30 novels. Drizzt experiences plenty of disappointment and hard stuff.

It's a fantasy fiction series, but the Ranger's Apprentice book series are my all time favorite books. The author also has a side series name Brotherband Chronicles set in the same world, but the RA books are better IMO.

Thanks. There's a few of these I want to read. I also forgot about the classics. There's several there I want to read. I think I'm gonna start with 'Sh*t my dad says' and 'The Art of War'.

It really depends on what genres you prefer but I’ll toss a few of my recommendations into the ring. L.E. Modesitt - The Recluse series. The Magic Engineer is one of my favorites along with Natural Ordermage/Mage Guard of Hamor double. Honestly there are only 1 or 2 of this series that I don’t recommend. Larry Correia - Pretty much everything he has written. I love the Monster Hunter series, mostly set in modern day and a fun premise (monsters are real, kill them and get paid) but the Hard Magic trilogy is a fascinating noir-based spin on pre WW2 alternate history. Mercedes Lackey - Valdemar series. Somme real surprises here. Oddly enough, two of my favorite trilogies are her earlier ones - The Arrows of the Queen set and The Last Herald Mage set. Tom Clancy - Without Remorse. My personal favorite of all the books he wrote. Nobody has the balls to make this one into a movie. James Hornfischer - Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors. Just stunning. Should be required reading in school. E. Williams Brown - Perilous Waif. Like sci-fi Anime with a female heroine? Want to get in early on what looks to be a great series? This is your book. Eagerly awaiting book 2 later this year.

I need to get a handle on it. Hey LT This is not a book but I just came across something by Marc or maybe Angel Chernoff. It's not a book but an article posted on the Marc and Angel Hack Life blog. There are a couple of books by the same Author's around the same concepts and the article has been published elsewhere. It starts with a rather profound quote which I've heard before. "The wisest, most loving, and well rounded people you have ever met are likely those who have known misery, known defeat, known the heartbreak of losing something or someone they loved, and have found their way out of the depths of their own despair. These people have experienced many ups and downs, and have gained an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, understanding and a deep loving wisdom. People like this aren’t born; they develop slowly over the course of time." It goes on to discuss 10 things in relation to struggles, growth and happiness which might offer you a perspective of benefit.

I won't ruin everyone's nice time with what I've faced in the last year, but I've kept a quote with me from Robert Jordan that's helped keep my head above water:
"The oak fought the wind and was broken. The willow bent when it must, and survived."
I can't recommend any books, but if you are having a hard time, with anything in your life, talk to people. Going it alone is the worst way through.

If you want to disengage from the real world might I suggest Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Even if you have watched the series the book will get you hooked. Its even more full of witty one liners and observations. And is funny too boot. Or just delve into Terry Pratchetts Discworld novels. The Moist Von Lipwig pair of Going Postal and Making Money are amazing characatures of real life.

LT...decided to start another book last night instead of playing tanks (big storm coming through) so I started "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson. It's a funny book that takes us from when there was nothing to where we are now in history and the world. The guy is really funny and it's started out very well.
I can also very highly recommend Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig. It's basically a book on how to live a better and more fulfilling life, but the story is told through a father and son taking a trip across America on motorcycles. Amazing.

Again not a book and relies on being online but. But if you're looking for something to read in an easy to digest format. I've found Quora to be a forum for a great many things and pretty good for creating perspectives of thought and increasing my understanding in relation to all sorts of topics. You can search on resilience or hardships or adversity for example and get all sorts of questions and answers. There are some really interesting questions, answers, stories and experiences as well as philosophy and debates and a great search engine. You could spend hours and hours submerged in this and stupidly, I've often gone to bed and found myself reading Quora. Here's some example spaces. www.quora.com/topic/Experiences-in-Lifeand www.quora.com/q/straightfromthesourceas well as www.quora.com/q/gold-medal-answers

Give The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists a look in, you should be able to pick up a cheap second-hand copy somewhere for next to nothing.
