I was googling the Massachusetts when I discovered it fought the Jean Bart in WW2. Didn't realize the Nazis forced the French to fight for them. Then I found out there was a heavy cruiser named the Wichita! That's my hometown. Always heard about it being the "air capital" but never heard about a ship being named the Wichita. It was an escort cruiser for the Massachusetts at one point. I thought that was pretty cool.

Wichita is currently in super test on WoWs. Jean Bart survived the war and was completed later. She sailed into the mid '50's, along with Richelieu.

The British sank a load of French ships in harbour after giving them the choices of joining the Allies, scuttling the ships or being destroyed. Some of the French joined the Germans I believe whilst most fought them. I think French women who slept with German soldiers had their heads shaved and were shunned by the French.

It was also a massive cock-up and was a big miscommunication, we were rightfully worried about French warships landing in to German hands, but we didn't know as far as to that the captains were already waiting to scuttle them if the Germans tried to make a move on them, At least as far as I know.

The CO of Richelieu went so far as to disobey orders to return to port and fled with ship and crew, eventually ending up in New York for a refit. One of her 380mm rifles is on display at the Naval Surface Warfare Center

If memory serves they were termed the Vichy French That's it, I was watching a programme called Combat Dealer and he was on about them. The Vichy French forces were the official French government forces after occupation of France and most of the forces that hadn't been decommissioned, which existed outside of France were directed to serve Germany's Interests via the now forcibly aligned Vichy French government. This had allied forces fighting all sorts of Vichy French forces including those of the Foreign legion in places like North Africa.
