I stumbled across these on youtube and found them pretty interesting. He opens and tries out a variety of MREs and survival rations both old and new from around the world.

I think one of my favorite parts is when he smokes those old cigs. I quit 5 years ago so I enjoy watchin him enjoy an old smoke for some reason.

If I never see another MRE it will be too soon. The winter MREs come in two white packages (need more calories) and have little wax cubes for heating them up...far better than the small water activated heaters (although you make bitching 2liter bottle bombs), and you could use them as fire starters.

I saw those bricks quite a few times when I was in Challenger Troop (something similar to cadets) and they were a bitch at times, since you had to break them over your knee to fit them in to the mess tin |

I was helping my brother move into a house he just bought and I went rooting around in the attic and found a box containing 4 "Beef Ravioli" MRE's. He said I could have them. Problem is they're all dated for 2006 and i'm pondering the possibility that they're still edible.

You could open them and find out (they probably are, the latest unedible ones I've seen him open are expermental from the early 90s). Or sell them on ebay.

I watched one where he had a German WW2 ration. The chocolate was perfect. It's amazing how well some of them survive.

I managed to secure a few cannisters of "expired" ANZAC MREs about 12 years ago ago which were being tossed out. I'm amazed how edible the stuff was given it's packing date was at least a decade earlier. I loved the condensed milk and that special chocolate which doesn't seem to melt in high temperatures and the various biscuits(cookies) even seemed fresh. But those granola(museli) bars and the PK chewing gum had some underlying chemical taste. The canned fruit was decent, Canned cheese was crap, the wet packs of various Asian and italian tucker was surprisingly tasty as were the cans of fruit. Also, the crackers, tubes of Vegemite, various Jam and sauce, all fine. No idea of the shelf life of MREs. These ones may well have been from the 80s and if I hadn't eaten them, probably would be just as fresh today.
