Hello all. I cannot play WoT at the moment due to my current location. But my friend has just started and I will be visiting him soon with my PS4. I'll have about 3 days with him. He's looking at going for both the Brit and US Shermans. He's keen on the Firefly but undecided on either the US Jumbo or Easy 8. I've explained to him the basics of the game; but also the concept of premium tanks, types of ammo, consumables, in game currency, earned experience, what each tank type tries to do in a game, basic crew training and some of the ingame mechanics (module damage, angling of armour, use of cover, use of concealment). The best thing overall is that he's having fun, so that's a tick in the box. Early on I made a lot of uninformed mistakes in this game, but by researching and using the forums I've become better over time. So this knowledge has been passed onto him. What would you teach and demonstrate to a new tanker who is just starting out in this game? GG

I'm sure R35T will provide you far better information than I will given his skill level, but these are the few things I would focus on at the beginning.
Tank angling to increase armor thickness Side scraping Ammo characteristics regarding pen, how they react to different armor types and angles weak spots good and bad trades key map areas

For the love of God....dont start WoT now.
But if you must, then beyond the great advice you'll get from Rest, plan on playing several thousand games in the 4-6 range before moving up. Build skills, learn maps and tendencies. Strengths and weaknesses of rank styles.
Dont rush to the high tiers.

The advice I'd offer is to watch as much YouTube as you can on the vehicles you're driving and facing, learn their roles and strengths and weaknesses. Don't go buying premium vehicles until you've researched them and you're sure they'll suit your playstyle, most of the time they do events where you can earn premium vehicles so be wary that the one you buy could be one they give away next.
Also there's a game called War Thunder which is on PS4 and is another free to play game, it's a lot more of a learning curve but in my opinion much more enjoyable. They also have planes and the Naval part is in Beta at the moment.

XD I'm not very long into the game myself but from watching Youtube and reading WoT forum comments I quickly saw how the game management had come a but unhinged. I'll try to impress onto him the need to take things slow. I only got into the higher tiers as my friends were only playing high tier tanks. But before that I was trying to grind out 1 or 2 crew skills per tier. He's pretty keen to just play the WW2 era vehicles. He's looked ahead into the tech trees and identified tanks he'll grind for. Thanks for the good advice

My friend will most certainly get a heads up about it. I've warned him about premium tanks and the reskin epidemic that is happening at the moment. War Thunders a pretty cool game. I've played it as well, not very well tho my ping was terrible (lol), as like World of Tanks the effort / time you put into the game is what you will receive out of the game. I'll introduce him to War Thunder as well, he's only up to Tier 4 in WoT so he's not really commited yet

I'd personally avoid spending any money on WOTC console, It's future is looking bleak and the playerbase is declining and unstable. But if you wish to splurge a little bit then get the Tiger 131 when you get good trust me you won't regret it.

I saw it mentioned in the other forum and thought of my mate wanting to get into the US Shermans. The only gold i'll spend now is on some premium time to gain access to the training room but other than that now I'm pretty tight with cash and WoT.

Damn it, phone died and my wall of text vanished..kind of frustrating. 40 mins just went down the tube. Ok, so i'll keep it brief now.
Do the tutorials. Your friend will get silver and gold for doing so. I'd use the gold on a low tier prem or 3 days prem time. Whilst doing the tutorial, enable vertical stabilisation in options and change any other things if needed.
Then, load up war stories. You get a free crew with sixth sense for US vehicles from the first war story(which are great for new players). If you do the rest of them, you can get UK, German, French, and Soviet crews too.
If possible, really try and complete some war stories, it's a good way to get used to the controls.
Before heading into a multiplayer game, learn the garage interface, how to change supplies etc. I'm hoping that the game teaches this by now.
Pick AP ammo over HE for any gun under 105mm below tier 5, and any gun under 130mm after tier 5. A few prem shells are worth having in tier 3 onwards. Press Y to switch currency type to silver when buying them. Equip small repair and first kits and a manual fire extinguisher on the tanks.
When it comes to gameplay, there's alot to learn and youtube, our knowledge centre, and guides elsewhere are useful. Basics are:
Forget stats for now Don't rush up the tiers Don't charge the enemy alone Don't camp base Don't head to flanks alone Avoid wide open spaces with no cover Angle against enemies Google "sidescraping" and "hull down". Shoot weakspots (lower plates, hatches) Reset your cap if the enemy try capping Retreat if needed Don't engage a superior foe (i'll elaborate this one. If you can't pen an enemy, lets say they are hiding their hull and you can't pen their turret. Don't waste time and shells against them. Just go elsewhere. Pick a different engagement)
I could post alot more but i wouldn't want to give too much info as it can get a bit overwhelming i'm told so basics it is, for now.
Alot of the learning process is trial and error. Learning which parts of the maps are good, which tanks are very dangerous etc. However we are always happy to answer questions so feel free to post any your friend may have.

These are awesome pointers, thank you. Thanks for taking the time and effort. He's mainly been fail platooning with a few friends; they yolo forward in Pz Ic's and he's still making it out of spawn just as they die. So there's pressure on him to be rash and not play his own game because his platoon mates are waiting in the garage. Or if he's solo he's slowly learning by his own experiences, as we all did at one stage. All the info from yourself and the others will be a useful primer for him. Thank you

The biggest mistake I made, and sometimes still doo, is slugging it out, when repositioning is normally the best choice. Never be afraid to run away if you feel overwhelmed. Better to reposition, than die needlessly.
Never forget that a tank with 1HP is as dangerous as a tank with 1000HP.

Quick tip if your friend needs silver. Unlock the last war story. Doing so grants the Trinity tank. Use that in the first war story, live fire exercise, to earn silver fast. Only takes a few mins per run and the silver adds up fairly fast.

In particular the "Brothers in Arms" story for silver and it gives him an enviromemt where he can explore the game a little at his lesiure. But I'm told they nerfed the War Stories so farming silver is alot harder?

Used to be able to earn alot more but it still adds up pretty fast.

I had a game just the other day in my M46...I had 2-3 pens to start the game, but got into a scrape with a T30, Type 5 and a Borsig when a couple of tanks around be disintegrated (a T92 and a HESHstar will do that). I was left on 130ish health after running for my life...ended the game with a win, 5 kills, 4.3k dmg and my 2nd MoE....none of that would have happened if I hadn't run away...even took a shot from the Type 5 while running.

Hi all Thank you for your contributions towards starting off a new tanker. 🙄 I'm gaming with him this weekend until Monday evening, so yeah it'll be a good weekend for him. He's got 3 free days of premium from the PS4 Plus store (comes with that premium German J "heavy" light tank), I used up my remaining gold for 3 days so I can get him into the training room to tour the maps, plus to teach him alot of the skill sets he'll need. Thanks for the warm welcome you gave him. GG
