As I was playing a battle on Wednesday and getting ready to launch a killer set of YOLO torps my laptop died. Screen just went black...and after much diagnosing it looks like it's the motherboard. I do have an ext warranty on it, so I should be ok there...but I will still be without a computer for 4-6 weeks. A friend loaned me her computer, but with just an i3, 4gb ram, and integrated graphics - the gaming experience is only slightly above a Nintendo.
SO...thinking about a replacement. I had been trying to save to build an i7-8700k/1080Ti machine - but I'm not close enough to my goal to build it, especially with current GPU prices.
My laptop is an i7, 960M, 16 gb machine and I don't want desktop that isn't at least that good - but I also know that laptop specs don't necessarily crossover to desktop specs.
Any of you guys know what would be considered "minimums" to have a good gaming experience? i5 vs i7; 1050, 1060, etc; 4gb, 8gb? Also, any of you know of any good deals on prebuilt or used/refurb machines?

I'm not able to add much other than I feel you on the Nintendo graphics. My backup laptop is an i3 with 4gb ram and integrated graphics. I see 15-20fps. Can't wait for my good one to be repaired.

Hey now, dont talk shit about Nintendo. You probably loved the graphics when they first came out!
What sort of price range are you looking at? You could pick up the new Alienware. My buddy has it, its actually pretty absurd.
Around 3000$ though, I believe.

It's not nearly as resource intensive as some AAA titles.

As someone who only has half the parts of a PC presently, I'll chip in with my experiences and thoughts. My current laptop is 6-7 years old as a model, an Intel i3-380M (1st gen mobile i3), base CPU graphics only, 4GB RAM. In WOWS, I'll top out at 15fps if no-one is shooting at anything, 6fps or less if things get hairy. If I don't turn off water graphics, I peak at 8fps My build I'm working to should be able to run max graphics WOWS comfortably, and 2015-era releases to an acceptable standard: AMD Ryzen 3 1200 (3.2GHz quad) AMD-B350 chipset Gaming Pro mobo GPU tbd, around the specs of Radeon 560/460 by Sapphire 8GB RAM Those components in Britbong monies on Amazon Prime are £300 maybe if you already had case, PSU, fans, HDD lying around?

Well, we'll see tonight if I got screwed or not. But last night I drove 5 hours round trip for what seems to be the deal of the century. Tested the computer at the guy's house and it all checked out...but still seems too good to be true.
Here's my new setup - all purchased for the princely sum of $980: i7-7700k GTX 1080 Ti 16GB Ram 500GB SSD 120GB NVMe Corsair Evo cooler 27" led monitor Razer mechanical keyboard Razer gaming mouse non-descript speakers

No, no, no. You didn't help support a drug habit, you helped break his addiction to PC Gaming! Good on you Sir!

If you were funding a drug habit, he'd have let that lot go for half what you paid That sounds like a seriously sweet deal, is she up and running yet?

Just getting it up and going. Posting from it and downloading WoWS. Seems like it's the real deal.

Update: Got WoWS installed fully yesterday afternoon (the 7.1 update slowed my progress since it was like doing multiple installs - and the server was down).
It's beautiful. I have every setting at max and it's holding around 120-125 FPS. Looking forward to blowing ships up tonight.

My build will be complete by Saturday - I went with a Sapphire Pulse RX560 variant that was cheap because Amazon Warehouse reasons. 8GB RAM stick arrived today, I was pretty surprised since I thought it would be here next week lol.
I am looking forward to having frames, but I have a backlog of Steam titles to work through as well... £650 all-in, accessories and all. Market value for all parts would probably be nearer £800

I just picked up a new comp for fairly cheap. 12 gb RAM, 2gb dedicated GE force graphics card, 3.6 ghz quad core processor.
It was on discount. 400 bucks off.
899$

So, so happy with my new build. Relatively high (not maxed) graphical settings, outputs a stable 75fps at all times (not paid much attention in high-intensity moments yet tho). Even my marksmanship has improved

Even my marksmanship has improved Congrats! I know going down to 15-20 FPS after enjoying 60 FPS with my better laptop made a huge difference in gameplay. Not just the graphics, but being able to shoot moving targets (especially DDs/fast cruisers) and dodge torps. It really feels like 2 different games. I have been playing the last few days at 144 FPS (144Hz monitor with Gsync) and have been experimenting dropping all the way down to 85 FPS (85Hz and Gsync) and really see no difference vs 60 FPS - but boy I can tell when it's below 30.

Yeah, my GPU fan is dumb and doesn't actually turn on unless I tell it to. I think Texas has too many greebles on it, because that only manages 55-65fps, or 30fps if the GPU is running at 82 degrees
