I got Warships to download on my old potato PC, so I was looking to grind a battleship line first, since my play time is limited. What would you guys recommend? The German and American lines look fairly user friendly, but...but but but...the Yamato. What's your take?

German. You are all but immune to citadels, and you have LOL secondaries.

I have played all the battleship lines quite a bit, and most of the premiums. Its mainly what I play, suuch a blast.
Japanese battleships are great. low tier they are slow and a little tanky, but tier 5 and up they gain surprising agility, and generally have the biggest guns for tier. You WILL damage what you hit. They have great AP and actually surprisingly effective HE as well. The mobility is nice because if you put yourself out of position you can easily relocate or fall back if necessary, which will happen a LOT when you first start playing BB's. They have OK armour so long as you arent sitting broadside to an enemy at 10kms without maneuvering. The Yamato has the biggest guns in the game so far, and can penetrate any ship from practically any range, no matter what angle (bow on included)
American BB's are well armoured and have decent ballistics, but they are SOOOOOOOOOOOO slow up until tier 7. Like.......incredibly so. You will often be left out of a fight, and if you position badly(which will happen) you have no chance at all of falling back or repositioning to assist your teammates. The game will fall apart for your team and you will suddenly find yourself overwhelmed by masses of enemies because your team collapsed on the side you didnt go to at the start. Their AA suites tend to be dangerous, and their armour is good, but expect to take a LOT of HE damage.
German BB's have excellent armour that rewards getting in as close as possible to the enemy. They have great AP, acceptable reloads, and fairly fast turning turrets. Their mobility is acceptable. At tier 7 they gain some speed and their secondary guns get truly insane. The tier 9 and 10 ships are absolute monsters, with insane health totals and great armour. This is the line with the vaunted Bismark, which is worth grinding even if you don't go higher.
British BB's have an absurdly good self heal consumable, making them survive truly astonishing amounts of damage over time if used effectively. So long as the Brit BB isn't killed, it will heal a huge amount of its health back up. They have a unique version of HE which, in addition to having a decent fire chance, does absolutely hilarious damage, which in some cases can equal or surpass the AP damage of other nations battleships. This makes HE spam surprisingly effective and damaging, as the damage from the hits and fires will climb during the course of a match. However, they have insanely long turret turning times and their armour isn't as effective as you would hope in some cases.
I would suggest the Japanese or German line to new players.
Japs for speed and ease of retreat or relocation, plus the longest range in the game. Being out of position isn't as bad in a Jap BB. Both ammo types are good.
German BB's for their forgiving armour, ludicrously powerful secondaries and ability to bully anything same tier or lower. They are just straight up FUN.

Thanks for the in-depth review. I think I'll go Japanese and German and just be slow at it. There's no hurry, really.

Thanks for the in-depth review. I think I'll go Japanese and German and just be slow at it. There's no hurry, really. No worries! The tier 3 and 4 Jap bb's are frustrating occasionally, but the Kongo at tier 5 is insanely powerful at its tier. All German BB's I have played so far I enjoyed. Get as close as you can to enemy ships. Hold crtl and click on enemy ships to manually target your secondary guns. Just be on the lookout for torpedos.

The Scharn is Tier VII isn't it? That is correct. Scharnhorst and Gniesenau are both tier 7, both fairly nimble, and both have excellent secondaries, as well as torpedos.

Green Gniesenaus annoy me greatly when I'm trying to torpedo BBs.
I'm sat behind, trying to line up torpedo shots, they tank and ricochet shot after shot because they're god damn Gneis, then they just launch four torps into the side of the BB they're brawling because they're bullies.

Germans are certainly great for newbies. I found the tier 3 and 4 to be bit naff but that's because the Konig albert spoiled me. The tier 5 is very accurate, the tier 6 Bayern is a good all rounder. The Gneisenau and Scharnhorst are both fast brawlers and the Bismarck basically plays itself.

Might need to start a German grind... and shunt some of my lower tier Brit ships. Only Tier Vs count in challenges now, anyway.
Might fool around in Tier I for a while, the Tier Is are seriously fun.
