Great news! You can test ships for free and go through lines very quickly on the Public Test Server. It's not perfect, but it's a great way to figure out what you do/don't like without spending the time to grind out lines on the live server! Sometimes the test server won't give you access to certain ship types, lines, or tiers - but it's great. The PTS is what renewed my desire to play USN cruisers and made me really want to grind USN/VMF DDs.
The test server isn't always up and running, but the 0.6.12 test server is coming very soon (mine just auto updated this morning).
You also get rewards on your main account for playing on the test server (usually flags and premium time), just make sure you register with the same e-mail address.
