I'm referring to the American Chaffee. I only recently unlocked it, post nerf. Admittedly I only have a new crew in it with zero skills or perks. I'm about 70% towards Sixth Sense currently. (I know I should've done Camo first and switched but I didn't.)
I say this respectfully as I love trying to learn the art of scouting. I mean it, a good match with lots of spotting damage is extremely satisfying for me. I have a fully upgraded tech tree Bulldog, RU-251, T49, Luchs, T-15, Locust and maybe some others. I have decent matches in all of those from time to time as I learn. I just don't "get" the Chaffee. I basically am trash in it. It just feels a bit slow for me. Of course I know this is most likely my own issues of just not being a great player but.. is the tank still good!? I mean post nerf.

It sure isn't what it used to be. Then again, it used to be able to see Tier X, those were some wild days.
I don't have as much experience in the "new" Chaffee as I do in the "old" Chaffee, but I find it to be fairly balanced. It is a little sluggish, but it really does have a great top speed. It can passive scout very well. It's gun is a bit lacking in my opinion, but if you can get the jump on a distracted enemy you can rip them apart in short order.
Edit: I see where you said you have zero skills or perks. That right there can basically spell doom for a light tank. I had a fresh crew in my Type 64 and it was an absolute nightmare. Once I finally got 6th sense on them, I'm really starting to enjoy it. It's like a night and day difference.

I think it is still good. It's not what it used to be, but then again it no longer go up against tier 10s. It's got a smaller profile now as well now that it's ditched the T37 turret.

I played the Chaffee back when it saw Xs, and did so as a 100% scout -- think I fired about 7 rounds in 10 games -- and didn't do poorly with it, either. (Probably averaged about 4k spotting a game).
You REALLY need perks/skills for it to work correctly. Focus on camo and vision skills first. With a camo net, Camo skill, and Green Thumb perk, the thing turns into a ghost when passive spotting.
When top tier (or even tier VI games) you should be able to out-vision nearly anything early in the game, and use the speed and ROF to clean up toward the end of the game.

Thanks all. I suppose I should reserve judgement until I have at least Sixth Sense and Camo unlocked. I like the challenge of driving a light in higher tier games. I'll stick with it.
I'll just Trex the crew until I get SS.

After reading this I took the Chaffee out agin, haven't done that since they changed it. I only have a 75% crew in it, but wow what a monster it has become now that it doesn't see tier 10 any more.
I'm using it in the same way as the M41 Walker Bulldog, active scouting in the beginning of the game, then going in behind their lines as the game progresses. I'm having so much fun in it at the moment, so thank you OP for reminding me it still exists, and once you "click" with it you'll gonna have a ball!!!!!!!

I can't remember the exact stats of the old Chaffee, but it certainly had the T37 turret as it's top upgrade. The new Chaffee feels faster at it's top speed, but I could be wrong on that! |
