I find it amusing that I've purchased only 3 games on Steam on the PC, and I've 100%'d all of them.
Momodora RUTM is a Metroidvania/Souls-esque game with adorable graphics, great boss designs and a gloriously dark story that sadly doesn't get enough of it told directly.
Evidently, I am a big fan of both Metroidvania and Souls-esque style games that do it right of course, looking at you S&S you piece of shit...
Price ;
Right now it's going at £7, I got it for only £2 during a sale.
Given that it is part of the Playism Bundle on Steam, if I understand it correctly that would mean it has a good chance of going on sale again later.
Honestly I'd probably still have paid £7 and got my money's worth out of it, I just got lucky with the timing.
Play time ;
It isn't a very long game, that should be noted, none of the Momodora games are and the third game even had an achievement for beating it in under 25 minutes.
However all things considered, I think on my best run I could beat it in 30 minutes, and no doubt it will be considerably longer for people playing it for the first time around.
And as a heads up, the Insane difficulty took me 3 hours to beat.
Difficulty ;
I said Souls-esque and that probably put a lot of people off of the game, no surprise really because those types of games thrive on difficulty and thus can be quite hard to get into unless you are used to that sort of thing.
Luckily, it comes with difficulty settings, something no Souls game has ever done.
Easy is of course Easy, given you are at Max HP from the start and even get two items to help you with I-Frames and regenerating HP at a slow rate.
Normal, Hard and later Insane do not give those items, and you have to get real good at abusing the hell out of I-Frames which isn't as troublesome as it sounds.
Art Style / Boss Designs ;
First off, the art style.
It's cute as fuck.
Frankly it's one of the most 'adorable' games I have ever played and is why if it has ever been seen in the shitbox I have constantly referred to it as 'Anime Souls'.
There isn't a single area I didn't enjoy the look of.
And now the Boss Designs.
As I see it, any Souls-esque style game is almost reliant on how they design their bosses. Dark Souls itself I say lives on how incredible some of their boss designs are.
Now obviously a 2D game is going to not be as good, but I'd say they did the job fantastically.
There is only one boss that you have to fight twice.
And something that caused me difficulty first time around, solely out of completionist habit, if you can beat a boss without taking damage or being affected by a status effect the entire fight, you get unique items from said boss.
Quite a few of those are worth getting and some I would say are borderline reliant to not feel like a complete maniac on Insane. Yes the bosses are designed in a fashion that you can actually beat them without being hit which is awesome.
The rest of it that I don't think I could write paragraphs about ;
OST is great, generally each area has it's own little background music and a few of the bosses as well.
Movement is good from the start, it gets fantastic later when you get a certain upgrade, you have a double jump from the start.
Controls are a bit wonky, this could be the biggest issue some people have however you can use a controller or completely change all the key bindings yourself.
There is a secret ending, but to get it the only clue I will give you is how it is Metroidvania, there is quite a few times you will backtrack to areas to go to previously inaccessible spots for items.
