Hello!
I am getting back into model building for the first time in, well, a long time. Currently, I have four models that I own that I haven't built yet.
Anyway, I don't have them built yet due to the fact that, having a shoestring budget, for lack of a better term, I can't afford things like an airbrush. I rely on regular brushes to do the work. (They are camel hair brushes, if that makes any difference.) So I decided to come here, knowing that there are quite a few modelers on this forum, to try and see if there are any tips you guys could give me. When I start building, I'll post the picture progress here.
One question I have in particular is this: How do I get a smooth paint surface using a brush?
I look forward to sharing this with my you guys.

There is a way to do it with thinning the paint a little. But I haven't had to do it, since I have an airbrush.
If you live in the states, Harbor Freight has a decent dual-action airbrush for like $20

Here's a pic of my current models. As you can see, I am a big fan of the Blackhawk.

At best I will most likely be building these on my kitchen table.

Cans of spray paint? Thin coats, 8-10" away.
Are you in the states?

I'm not sure what sort of look/effect you're looking for but a base coat of flat white or flat light grey spray paint makes a great primer if you want to hand paint camo and maybe some dirty bits etc. If you're working on a clean paint scheme like Thunderbirds, then that's something different.
You can make a spray box for interior spray painting. Google apartment spray booth.

Use a primer coat before you paint it, spray cans of this work best and they're fairly cheap, you can get them from most hardware stores. When you're painting using a brush, you don't want to use thick paint, because it tends to leave big streaks when it dries. You can thin acrylics down with water and enamels with white spirit/turpentine/enamel thinners. Brush it on using a fairly wide brush, and try to aim for a few thin coats rather than trying to get the whole thing done in one coat. Apply the next coat only when the previous one is totally dry. Remember that primer though, once I started using that my work improved immensely, because a lot of brands of acrylics and enamels just won't work at all without the primer coat underneath. Hopefully that helps.

Do that before. The holes are usually for attaching missiles and other external stores (it should say what they're for in the instructions), so if you don't want those you don't necessarily need to drill them.

I don't follow. The idea is that you mix the enamel paint with thinners, then paint it on, leave it to dry and give it a few more coats. I don't think the colours would blend so long as the other colour was fully dry when you painted the other one over the top.

My line of thinking was that you dip brush in thinner, dip in paint, paint on, dip brush in thinner to clean brush, repeat process for different color. (I guess I'm kind of a noob at this.) With that in mind, what's a good setup for your paints (i.e. Shot glass of each, etc.)? Also, what's a good ratio of thinner to paint? (Is it 1:1 or should there be more paint or more thinner?)

I haven't a clue on the ratios I'm afraid, it's not something I use, I tend to go for acrylics. I'd say just keep adding little bits until you've got the right consistency.

Just putting a post on here so that it doesn't look like this section has been forgotten about. The weather is starting to get warmer here so sooner or later I'm going to get around to building my models.
