It's become fairly obvious news that companies are considering moving away from the currently standardised model of owning a game on a hard drive or on disk (nowadays having to be installed on hard drives anyway lmao).
I have a few thoughts and a few worries about the movement towards this form of gaming, as you may have guessed from the title.
Before I continue I feel it's best to explain exactly what I'm talking about.
Most of you are already aware you can watch somebody else broadcast a game, which is all well and good. Some might question why you'd watch someone else play a game instead of playing it yourself but that's for another time and place.
Game streaming is a service that bypasses the download/installation processes and allows you to play a game that is having it's data remotely broadcast to you as you play.
Now to outline my thoughts.
First of all, the good: Game streaming can go a long way to freeing up natural resources from needing less discs or hard drives being built. Less immediate space is taken up on your platform of choice, and with good internet speeds, you could in theory start playing instantly.
And then, the bad: Some concern was shared about the Xbox One's initial launch plans when always online DRM was introduced. This meant for most if not all games you needed to always be connected to the internet to play (correct me if I'm wrong on that, slightly intoxicated). Imagine having even more of that, plus other insidious methods of control over the stuff you know you own. Second of all, there's a much greater risk of games being lost to history in the event that streaming services get shut down as the generations move on, as you don't own an installed version or a physical copy of games that might happen to be on the service.
Being only 23 I could very well live to see the age in which this happens, an age to where games return to truly dying, merely having the memories of them remain.
Not to mention that it isn't uncommon for people to still have poor internet reception in some areas of the world, meaning they wouldn't be able to enjoy the games without freezing due to data loading.
What are are your thoughts towards game streaming? It really is in it's infancy still, so much of what I said might turn out to be false. Are you looking forward to it? I personally am not.
