This is my first playthrough of Hearts of Iron IV rather than III (I've played it loads, but this is the first one I'm writing up), and I'll be playing as the Netherlands. My goals are simple. Firstly, to develop the Netherlands into a strong industrial power. Secondly, the militarise the Netherlands to be able to weather the storm of WW2 without being invaded (chiefly by Germany). I don't aim to change ideologies or make aggressive invasions, merely to survive and hopefully seize some German land near the end of the war. My first order of business, defend the border! The army was moved over to the German border, a total of eight divisions of infantry. A further three were raised following the introduction of limited conscription laws, and were sent to train up before joining the main force. This picture also shows contingency fallback lines, and an offensive plan to capture the cities of Wilhelmshaven, Dusseldorf and Essen, which will be enacted if German forces prove to be weaker than expected. It was decided that the border must be fortified. My hopes are for a Dutch version of the Maginot Line, which will hopefully be impenetrable. For now, the German border is being fortified up to level 5 (of a possible 10). The bunkers will be further developed later. I think it would also be foresightful to fortify the Belgian border, not against Belgium itself but against Germany's usual plan of going through Belgium. The state of Dutch industry in May 1937: This is an improvement over what we initially had in 1936, which was four military factories and only two naval dockyards. Now we have nine military factories and seven dockyards. The military factories produce mainly rifles at this point, and some support equipment. This will all need to be stockpiled for reinforcements and new divisions later. The hope is to eventually produce artillery too, but that will happen when we have more factories. The dockyards produce convoy ships, destroyers and light cruisers. The European fleet in May 1937, which consists of two heavy cruisers, and three destroyers, two of which are recently-produced and more modern ones. There is a larger Dutch fleet in the East Indies, but that is going to stay there to defend our overseas interests. Henri Winkleman is appointed Commander in Chief of the Dutch Army: He is an expert in defensive fighting, and he will help in the war to come. Bernhard Coltoff is appointed to the military staff. He is an expert in infantry warfare, and since our army is entirely infantry based, he will provide helpful guidance in this area: Diplomatic efforts are made to improve our relations with Belgium and Luxembourg. The hope is that some time in the future we will be able to form our own faction rather than have our fates decided by the Allies. Our nine divisions based in the Dutch East Indies, many of them colonial reserves, are redeployed to properly garrison the colonies: More to come soon.

An overview of our current air forces. Only twelve fighters. Oh dear. We must make great strides in our technology for there to be an effective air defence system for the Netherlands. We are carrying out research into concentrating our industry, improving our machine tools and developing new radar technologies: In September, things started kicking off in Asia: We complete research into a new type of fighter. When we have the available industry, we will begin producing it to supersede our older models: Our current progress into electrical and mechanical engineering: We are making great strides in radio, computing and radar. Our improvements in industry so far: We have made advances in machine tools, construction and concentration of industry to improve output. Fokker is appointed to help conduct new research into fighter and close air support aircraft: Royal Dutch Shell is also appointed to help with industrial research: Poland seeks Baltic co-operation: We pursue progress in our politics in order to allow us to send volunteer forces to uphold democracy around the world: We also decide to follow a "grand battleplan" doctrinal style, starting with research into the ideas of trench warfare. This will help our troops to dig in: We also start further development of computing:

Haha, I'm Dutch...and there are a few 'peculiarities' to both the thread title and the names.
Even more peculiar real life fact; AD 2016, Dutch ground forces even lack a tank corps at all.

You've piqued my interest. Does look like a time consuming game, though. How long does a campaign run on average?

It depends on how far you want to take it, I played Fascist Turkey from 1936 through to about 1949 and I think it took about a week or so with a few hours a day, but it might go faster or slower depending on how you play.

Haha, I'm Dutch...and there are a few 'peculiarities' to both the thread title and the names. How so? "The Netherlands" in dutch is simply "Nederland". The name in English, is actually plural, preceded by the adjective determiner "The", which refers to The Netherlands, constituted by its provinces. So the proper dutch way to put it would be something like "Glorie aan Nederland". One other minor thing I noticed ; a character name; "Henri Winkleman". They probaly mean "Winkelman" since that is the correct spelling. The name stems from the dutch word 'winkel', which means 'store' or 'shop'.

I just used Google Translate for the title, I didn't expect it to be entirely right. Also it actually is "Winkelman". If you look closely at the picture it says "Henri Winkelman" but I cocked up the caption and spelt it "Winkleman".

As an aside, Hearts of Iron III is available for £1.99 on Steam at the moment, and Hearts of Iron IV has 10% off.

Hearts of Iron III is a lot harder to play and understand than IV, and it involves a huge amount of micromanagement. IV is a lot better with the UI and in making the game easier to get into.

Good to know. My time is limited so IV sounds a bit better to jump into.
