I've been playing around with this 1930s/WW2 strategy game lately, Hearts of Iron III. Essentially you control any country in the world from the year 1936 onwards, and get dragged through WW2. I played as Turkey. The year is now 1961 (it was supposed to stop by 1948 but for some reason it didn't). WW2 has not finished yet. A quick rundown of the current geo-political situation: Turkey (me) has invaded and annexed or occupied: Bulgaria, Romania, Iraq, Persia, Oman, Yemen, Afganistan, British Kuwait, British Cyprus, and the British Trucial States (Aden basically). Germany has invaded and annexed or occupied: France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Austria, Czechoslovakia, British Egypt and Sudan, French Africa (most of it) and Iceland. The USSR I will move onto later. Japan has invaded and occupied British Burma, India, Malaya, Singapore, French Indochina, most of the Netherlands East Indies and British Hong Kong. It has made puppet states of all the Chinese factions (apart from Yunnan). The Japanese have not yet launched any attacks on any US interests in the Pacific, including the Philippines, even though the two are at war. It is 1961. Brazil and Argentina have been occupied by Colombia & Venezuela and Chile respectively. Italy has taken Malta and Spain has taken Gibraltar. Germany holds the Suez Canal. The British influence in the Mediterranean is gone completely. The USSR has gone a bad way. Germany invaded as per usual. Eventually the USSR surrendered, and Germany annexed everything west of the Caspian Sea. An armistice was signed. Eventually I got bored and decided to declare war on the USSR again, dragging Germany and Japan into it with me. The Japanese invaded from the east and Turkey from the south. The front against the Germans remained more or less unchanged. The USSR surrendered again. This time Japan turned it into a puppet state. At this point the Comintern faction ceased to exist. There is a stalemate in the African front, between Germany and Britain. The Germans hold British Egypt and Sudan, the British everything south of that. There hasn't been any movement for several years as supply lines are so hopelessly strained that no units can make offensive movements. As it stands, the factions are: Allies: United Kingdom Yemen (government in exile) Bhutan (government in exile) Nepal (government in exile) New Zealand Xibei San Ma (government in exile) South Africa Australia Poland (government in exile) Ireland United States Philippines (American puppet) Denmark (only holds Greenland) Norway (government in exile) France (only holds some African territory) Canada Belgium (only holds some African territory) Netherlands (only holds some Pacific territory) Luxembourg (government in exile) Panama Venezuela Switzerland (government in exile) Cuba Costa Rica Honduras Bolivia El Salvador Nicaragua Colombia Paraguay Mexico Haiti Ecuador Guatemala Chile Dominican Republic Romania (government in exile) Uruguay The Allies hold 23.1% of the world's 'victory points'. Axis: Germany Italy Japan Manchukuo (Japanese puppet) Hungary Shanxi (Japanese puppet) Portugal Slovakia (German puppet) Nationalist Spain Nationalist China (Japanese puppet) Yugoslavia Siam (Japanese puppet) Greece (Italian puppet) Sweden (German puppet) Finland (German puppet) Turkey Saudi Arabia Argentina (government in exile) Vichy France (German puppet) Brazil (government in exile) Tibet USSR (Japanese puppet) Mongolia (Japanese puppet) Sinkiang (Japanese puppet) Indochina (Japanese puppet) Yunnan The Axis powers hold 76.2% of all the world's 'victory points'. Comintern: The Comintern faction has no members and hold no victory points. It became defunct with the defeat of the USSR. Unaligned: Peru is the only country in the world that has not taken sides and remained neutral. A map of the world as it is in 1960, as (badly) coloured in by me: To clear up any confusion German puppets (Sweden etcetera) are just shown as Germany. Japanese puppets are just shown as individual countries (apart from Indochina. It became a country when some partisans rose up in Japanese-occupied French Indochina. After being defeated by Japan they were allowed to form a single-province nation in the middle of Japanese Indochina. It was too small for me to be bothered to put on the map). I couldn't be arsed with the American islands in the Pacific, but they're all just as they should be. American. Just thought that'd be interesting for you and bring something new to the table here. Oh, and the glorious New Ottoman Empire has just developed the atomic bomb.

This is interesting. Ottoman empire with nukes would cause a huge shift of power no doubt. Does the US not have them in this reality?

To be honest I don't know if anyone else has a nuclear programme. I didn't put any intelligence resources into that kind of espionage and I don't think the game tells you when a country develops nukes or even when and where they get used. It's quite possible the Americans, Germans, British, Japanese and Italians all had them before me and even used them without my realising it. Considering that I'm still using 1936-vintage aircraft in 1961 I'm probably behind in every other area too.

1936 vintage aircraft? Oh dear. You've done well considering that. So you have nukes but no viable way of efficiently deploying them i'm guessing. What's your next step?

Who are Vichy France and Vichy Africa allied with? Seems like if they're not allied with the Germans or Spanish they'd be very prone to be choked off.

Now, the Turkish nuclear programme was completed and bombs went into production. The first Turkish atomic bomb was dropped on London in March of 1962. National unity was damaged very heavily. On the 1st of December 1962, the Turkish dropped a second atomic bomb on London. The British national unity was completely destroyed, and they surrendered. The country surrendered to Japan, and became a Japanese puppet state. Whilst Britain had all of its colonies returned, and was officially independent, it was under the control of the Japanese and a part of the Axis powers. This is the world as it looked in 1963. Any area under de facto control of a country is shown as such. For example Vichy French Africa is shown as the same colour as Germany, because Vichy France is a German puppet. Likewise all of the British colonies, and the USSR, are shown as Japanese. The Japanese have also invaded Ireland via Britain. The situation is less than favourable for the Allies. The Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and the USA are the last few big Allied countries to be dealt with, aside from South America. With a few more upgrades, Turkish strategic bombers will have the capability to carry out nuclear strikes on American cities from Japanese-controlled Bermuda.

Damn good news for the New Ottoman Empire! The African front was locked in a stalemate, a stalemate I decided to break. Assembling the marine corps for operations, landings were carried out first at Cape Town and Durban in South Africa. The landings were stalled for a long time, until a breakthrough was made at Durban, with forces taking the city. However, the landings at Cape Town were still not successful. The newly-captured airfield at Durban was used to stage a bombing attack, with an atomic bomb on Cape Town. Defences there quickly broke down and the Turkish marines took the capital. Further landings were carried out at Port Elizabeth, and met with no resistance. The South African capital had moved to Polokwane and troops were marched north to capture it. Infantry divisions could now be shipped in via the beachheads, and forces were consolidated to take over the south coast. Polokwane was captured and thereafter, as Turkish forces moved through the country, the capital changed several times, including Richmond and Bloemfontein. Eventually every part of South Africa had been taken by Turkish troops, although South African troops still held parts of "British" Africa and Portuguese Africa. At this point the game still hadn't notified me of any South African surrender or capitulation and I had to stop playing. Next time it'll either tell me they've surrendered, or if not I'll just go and free all of the occupied territories they took and see what that does. Anyway, a great success for Turkey!

South Africa capitulated to Turkish forces once the South African-held Portuguese ports of Benguela and Inhambane were quickly taken from their control. I have to say the South Africans on this occasion weren't as tough as I had expected. I ran into the famous Jan Smuts who was commanding the South African Army HQ division during the campaign. The march on Belgian African territories has begun and they have decided to leave as a government-in-exile, so they're still fighting and we'll have to take over the rest of their territory to quash them.

Okay, so I got a bit more time in today and nothing much happened. The Belgians were finally wiped from Africa, although a single province within Portuguese Mozambique remains Belgian-occupied and has troops in it, but they're getting sorted out by the Portuguese. So I'll count that as a win, the Axis powers now have total control over all Europe, Africa, Russia and mainland Asia. I took back Grand Bahama from the Americans, who then kicked me out again and then I kicked them out again. I tried it on with Puerto Rico and got my backside handed to me. The Americans are a bit more of a handful than the South Africans and Persians. I'm thinking I'll go for the Philippines next. Maybe Australian Guinea. The Japanese are there and fighting them but there's a bit of a stalemate, although the Germans have finally got stuck in in the east and have landed on some outlying islands. I reckon that the Pacific needs to be sorted out before I turn my attention west. Anyway, then the game lagged out and I gave up. Probably a large landing force of Turkish marines on one of the outlying Philippine islands, I think.

Bad news I'm afraid, chaps. Something appears to have happened to the save file, so it's incredibly laggy and almost impossible to play. So it looks like I'll let the sun set on this New Ottoman Empire for now. It's been fun. I'm starting a thing with Italy now in search of a New Roman Empire. Next stop Albania!
