I always get it first. I do this because I have a lot of premium tanks, so I can train crews quickly.

Mentor and bia first on all my crews. I can handle a slight disadvantage early on for the millions of extra xp I get down the road. I've gotten around 3 million extra crew xp give or take because mentor and bia are my 1st perks always. A lot disagree with me but I don't care, all that xp adds up

I don't remember the numbers exactly, but mentor saves a metric fuck ton of XP; equivalent to cutting the number of matches you will need to train a skill by more than half.

It depends on how many skills/perks you plan on training (on this crew), how many crews you plan on training (how many tanks in garage) and how much gold you want to spend. The only time I would use Mentor now would be to train it faster and then swap for a perk like Sixth Sense or BIA.
I used to be in the ‘train it first camp’ but after doing the Math’s I’ve changed my mind and swapped it out for something more useful on all crews because:
1) I’d rather take more important skills/perks early that can help me get more XP per battle (i.e. Sixth Sense, Repairs, BIA & Camo). 2) I don’t have any plans on having more than 12 skills/perks on any crew. 3) I like playing different tanks and have 40+ crews to train. 4) I’d rather have lot of crews with 5 or 6 essential skills/perks so I can play all my tanks more effectively. 5) After playing 12,000+ battles (mainly with premium time) my best crews still only have 9 skills/perks. 6) I don’t believe you need more than 10(ish) skills/perks to get any noticeable benefit. 7) The amount of XP you save by using Mentor first (and keeping it) only pays off if your crew has 10 or more skills/perks (but only when you swap it out for something useful for 10 gold). Up to that point it’s not worth it unless you plan on grinding 10+ skills/perks on one ‘super crew’.
I hope this helps and there are plenty of threads with the Math’s analysis on the official forum if you do a search.

i only started thinking about crew skills after id done about 4k battles, before that it was free 50% crews in everything propa noob style. now im at 17k battles and i have a 11 skill crew, a 10 skill, 3 9 skill crews, and about a dozen with 6~8 skills and the rest of my 40something crews have atleast 2 skills but most have 4 as thats the sweet spot. all my crews have mentor. after selling some tanks as i had too many i have 103 tanks left and when iv elited the 5 lines im gvinding i'll stop grinding tanks and just grind skills till i have marks and ace tankers on all my tanks. lots of tanks or crews is no reason not to use mentor, and i'm 99% sure the break even point is after 6 skills not 10, as xp needed doubles every 4 skills at 10 skills you have ground out 20 times the xp needed to get the 1st skill so mentor has paid for its self twice by then and thats without the extra bonus vents and bia give you.

If you do the Math's you'll see that using only Mentor pays for itself at 12 skills/perks (once you swap it for something else for 10 gold). I said 10+ skills/perks as it can be pay for itself faster by using low tier premium tanks.
My reasoning for having too many crews to grind 10 or 12 skills/perks on is completely valid given the amount of time I have available to play the game. Good luck with your approach though.
