Hey all, not-scott here. As most if not all remaining active members of this board already know, the Official World of Tanks Console community manager has announced the closure of the OWoTC forums, although a date hasn't yet been given.
As much of a hell as that place can be, I never found it to be entirely devoid of useful information or indeed, precious memories and banter.
So, I've taken it upon myself to build up another internet archive using the Wayback Machine. A great little tool that saves pages in seconds for viewing later for years to come, even past the original page's expiry date.
How will this work?
This is largely a short little independent venture of mine. I'm going to try and save as much as I possibly can using the tools of the Wayback Machine and list them here under yet to be named categories. Categories will be condensed in neat little spoiler boxes, and I will occasionally bump the thread upon any significant additions and news (if that's okay with the mods?). I'll also reserve 3 posts in case this gets particularly massive.
Can I help in any way?
Requests! Send me requests. Tell me if there's a thread out there you want preserved, I'll try my best to see that it gets archived. I'll create a personal checklist and mark it off when it is done then put it under aformentioned categories. Ideally, post a link, so I can archive it without searching. Due credit will be given if that's your thing.
However, in the event of truly insanely sized threads, like the "Which forumer did you meet" thread, I cannot possibly be expected to archive the entire thing alone, so in the case of threads such as these, I'd much rather prefer requests for a specific page over the entire thing.
If you want to make the process faster, the tools can be used anonymously without creating an account! Grab the link to a page, go to archive.org/ and click the icon highlighted below in the image near the top-left, then paste the link in the "save page now" field. This will instantly archive the page! When you're done with that, just say something like "I archived this (etc)" with the link you saved, and I'll add it to the relevant category and give you credit! I'm not a completely ungrateful person, you see. 
I've already archived the thread mentioning the closure to the date of this post, of which I'll include here ( Now locked) while the link is still live.

Bulk Archives
Note: This archive is currently experimental, as I am testing the "Saving Outlinks" tool tor archive these pages in bulk, which should hopefully mean an explosive increase in preservation. One should be able to navigate these early few chapters as though you were browsing the beta forums of yore.

Bah, it's going to be a bit difficult to fill out the Community Contributions section. They've only gone and sandwiched the Guides and a place to request help under the same area so all of the requests for help are burying the actual guides!
Edit: The Community manager has had me know that The Library may be preserved in a "Read-Only" state, so archival of that subforum isn't a huge priority.

That was quite the entertaining thread I do agree on that being the entertaining thread, and do understand that everyone shared knowing the potential risks, but I don't know if I can do that without it being potentially dangerous to everyone involved with it. People have gotten pretty vile with doxxing as of late.
I definitely don't want to contribute in any way to real world harm.

Okay so, with the help of the "Save Outlinks" tool, it is now feasible to archive entire forum pages in bulk, all visible threads on the page included.
It's not perfect however, but even so, all that means is having to maunually save the problem pages in question. It's a pretty good time save for a lot more threads archive.
As such the current archive has now shot from 15, past 50 and to 63 threads!
Since the library isn't such a huge priority, I'll soon work on using this method to save some of the earlier known threads in some other forums.

A decent amount of the community has been requesting snapshots, some of which are now viewable under the "Community Requests " section.
The overall amount of content has also now reached around 270 threads so if you don't want a trip to the library, you could entertain yourself with a good amount of brain-damage laden quality reading.
Perhaps I'll make another section (not necessarily an archive) of the more interesting finds and post screenshots or outlinks as-is.
For example, in one of the bulk captures of the Historical Discussion subforum, there was an outlink to British army documents, of which must have had 140 captures on the Wayback Machine in of itself. Scouring can be done after I cannot archive any more threads though, as some things cannot wait (work/family/Christmas is obviously a priority over archiving, but you get my point, there's no immediate danger over losing the archive unlike the live forum now).
I'm not likely going to bump this thread here again unless there's been something really interesting (definition of which varies highly with my neurodivergence), or the thread number reaches another milestone. I'd like to hit 1,000 threads, although community requests of individual threads will take priority over bulk any day.
Unless said requests are for bulk, in which case yey.

It was out of order the way the CM announced the closure of the forum whilst at the same time rubbishing it saying it was messy and hard to follow. Which isn't true, it's just made up stuff to justify the closure. He was totally dismissive and showed zero acknowledge of what it meant to many of the players. Then, as if that was not bad enough, he locked any threads that were discussing it. It's one thing to close the forum and it is quite another to not allow people to discuss it. The CM said the decision to close it is "set in stone", if that's the case then why the problem with us talking about it, it's not like we can exert an influence, WG will do what they want regardless. |
