I am not excited, to be entirely honest. I enjoy the current CV's ability to be a force multiplier in pretty much any area of the map, or even multiple areas simultaneously, as well as fulfilling the roles of an active scout with reasonable effectiveness.
The limitation of one squad controlled at once seems like a tremendous reduction in the effectiveness of an CV.
If your CV is attacked while you are controlling your squadron of planes, your ability to dodge torps and enemy fire would probably be incredibly limited, unless you give up the ability to attack with planes in order to protect your carrier. In the current system you can do both at once with some minor micromanagement. Set your planss to an attack course with auto attack and then select your carrier to focus on, while selecting a friendly ship for your fighters to defend automatically. Then you can attack an enemy with reasonable effectiveness while still focusing on your carrier for defence.
Im not saying that the new system won't be playable, I just think it will massively limit a CV captains tactical flexibility compared to the current system. I sure hope that I am wrong though. Maybe I am just crusty because I was able to make this current system work for me. I understand that it could be difficult and frustrating for players new to CVs.
The removal of manual drops from tiers below 6 really destroyed the ability for people to learn the different style of play it seems.

Ronnie I wasn't a new player. I understood manual drops and strafing but I still couldn't master them well enough to go play in randoms. I think with the rework a team will still have a chance at winning even with a potatoe cv after tier 6. Maybe if I eat shit and sleep cvs I could play at higher tiers but then I forget how to play if I take any kind of break. Which makes getting back into cvs a pain in the ass when I do decide to play again. Which is pretty much why all my cvs have been sitting in the port. I didn't bother to take my Hakuryu to coop becuase when I did it cost me 100k to play and I didn't have fun becuase I couldn't handle 8 squads of planes at once. This rework allows me to do what I wanted to do in the first place, fly around and shoot boats.

At this point I'm just waiting for the rework to go live, and see how the new mechanics do.

It could turn out to be a blast, you never know! I'll give them props for being ballsy enough to 100% completely change every aspect of an entire class of ships in their game, not to mention all skills and medals associated with that class, as well as the entire system of AA thats been implemented from day 1 on every other ship. The rework and balancing alone on the AA must have been a pain in the ass. Every ship's AA will have to be altered for this rework, and the Def AA consumable changed too.
It makes me glad I didnt waste time grinding up to tier 10 in a CV before hand haha
