Hi all I have 5 movies which I have found enjoyable and also moving. White Tiger (2012) - a WW2 film about a Russian tanker's struggle with a mythical Tiger VIE. Great T-34 footage. (subtitled film, audio is Russian). Cross of Iron (1977)- a WW2 film about a German infantry squad who are inconflict with their superior's claim to valour. Kokoda (2006) - a WW2 film about Australian soldiers fighting the Japanese Army on the Kokoda Track, New Guinea. Beneath Hill 60 (2010) - a WW1 film about Australian miners detonating mines under the German trenches on the Western Front. also 13 Assassins (2010) - a Feudal Japan (Tokugawa Shogunate era) movie about a group of Samurai who are entrusted to carry out an act of revenge. all 5 films have great settings, and attention to detail. GG

When Trumpets Fade: A lesser known film set in the even lesser known battle of the Hurtgen Forest. Rather grim and depressing though.
The Longest Day: A long but good movie that Has a lot of accurate details about the Normandy landings.
Kelly’s Heroes: Just a good fun movie with surprisingly accurate historical details and bizarrely inaccurate weapons. One of the best fake Tiger tanks until Saving Private Ryan though.
Apocalypse Now: the original heart of darkness. I actually prefer the original to the extended cut myself.
Black Hawk Down: One of the more realistic war movies, it gave me some flashbacks.
Saving Private Ryan: Nothing else needs to be said.

^ the director of Kokoda also directed Beneath Hill 60. But both films have been filmed differently. In Kokoda the director wanted to capture the up close and personal feeling of jungle warfare with the Japanese, but also the inexperience of the Australian militiamen who were fighting them.

Am I allowed to add Inglorious Basterds to the list? I think it's fine. If someone's getting their history from these movies, then that's on them. Even the ones that are pretty accurate aren't perfect. 🤓 For a minute I had this one confused with The Monument's Men where they're trying to recover artwork. I haven't seen either one--couldn't get into them. I just made it war and military since there were so many recommended of that genre and it also connected with war games a lot of us play. If we had a thread for all movies, that'd be cool too, but would probably be really cluttered with so many out there.

I seen that Neil Simon died today and one the the films he is credited with is Biloxi Blues. Its pretty good but definitely off color in many places. Matthew Broderick plays in it and I think Christopher Walken and Margot Kidder as well
