Courtesy of Yurei i have this ship and she is pretty great. The youtube vids give her a bad rep but they all seem to be classing her as a BB. When played as a battlecruiser instead she becomes great, a force multiplier for the team. Being able to quickly relocate to where you are needed most means you can support a push or a weakened flank alot easier than other BBs, with speed bost and the speed signal she's breaking 35 knots which is great.
Her dispersion is bad, on both main battery and secondaries so she is RNG reliant outside of about 12km but i've found switching ammo types depending on the distance helps in a way as AP tends to be ineffective at long range as only a couple of shells hit and often at bad angles. I use HE at the start for the long range shots (she has over 23km range and great shell velocity so tends to get shots in early) then switch to AP at around 14km. I've gone for a bit of a weird build, opting for priority target, expert marksman (the turret traverse one, incase i got the name wrong ) followed by the 1 that raises fire chance, and then the 1 that boosts secondary range and upgrades for the secondaries. This means she has a 38% fire chance on her primaries and 10km range on her secondaries. Her secondaries seem to fire wildly in random directions but they too seem to set quite a few fires, and regardless of how effective they are when people see a BBs secondaries open up at 10km they turn and run.
Every game i get double figures of fires started, plus nice chunks of damage from the AP that seems to get alot of pen for 380mm guns although she can't overmatch many ships bows. Her repair party resets after 60 seconds which is nice as she has low hp at around 62k, but due to the fast repair reset that hp lasts her a long time so she can be quite tanky. Her AA also isn't too bad but planes tend to get fish in the water then get destroyed.
She only has 8 guns in a 4x2 layout with 1 aft and 1 forward so that can take a bit to get used to unless you have played Graf Spee. Thankfully her turrets turn quickly so bringing them to bear isn't too bad but the safest way to do it is to angle and fire the front turret, wait for enemy to fire, then angle a bit more to bring the rear turret in line, fire and immediately reduce your angle again. Timing has to be good though, get it wrong and you will eat shells at a bad angle. Thankfully she has a turtleback but it's still best not to eat AP shells. Being a tier 8 she also earns a fortune which is nice.
Overall i'm really enjoying this over sized battlecruiser. Thanks Yurei!

Thanks for the detailed write up. My birthday is in a few days and I've been thinking about either Gascogne or Alabama, but I'm pretty torn.

I don't own Alabama so i can only judge her stats but if you want a ship that plays like a good battleship then i'd get the bama. Gascogne doesn't fare so well in a standard battleship role and brawling with them doesn't seem do so well if she's the focus of thier fire. If you want a ship that is fast enough to re-inforce a flank for some friendly cruisers (earning a lot of compliments doing this) , and can let her secondaries create an area of denial on caps for cruisers and DDs whilst being able to lob shells at ships in the cap at the other end of the map then Gascogne is brilliant. She fills a support role very well. As a battlecruiser she's absolutely amazing, as a BB there's other ships that can probably fill that role better, she suffers to HE quite badly due to 32mm deck armour so she's vulnerable to HE so tanking isn't her main job, but the fast heal does mean she can do it if need be, for a little while.

I'm kinda leaning toward Gascogne. The ability to run when I've done something stupid is no small thing. Plus, I can buy Alabama anytime with doubloons, where as the Gascogne may or may not end up in the tech tree.

Thanks for the detailed write up. My birthday is in a few days and I've been thinking about either Gascogne or Alabama, but I'm pretty torn. Of the two, I'd say Alabama. Nothing necessarily against the Gascogne - but the US BBs aren't bad throughout the entire line and the T8-T10 are some of the best ships in the game. The Alabama will teach you proper angling, train a US BB captain, and hit super hard. The dispersion seems to be less troll than Gascogne and you have 1 extra gun of a larger caliber with the same reload. Gascogne has some things going for it - but at the end of the day - 8 15" guns with wonky dispersion isn't ideal. I mean...that's what the Bismarck and Tirpitz already have and they have better citadel protection to go along with it. Yes, the Gascogne has long range secondaries - but again, so do the Bismarck and Tirpitz. Currently, the high tier French BBs don't seem to be quite as strong as other nations (from what I've seen so far)...but they could always receive buffs, so YMMV.

Gascogne might be a mistake for me. I played three matches in Tirpitz and never managed more than 26,000 damage. I was hitting shots, but everything bounced. Battleships, cruisers, destroyers - didn't matter. One match I had 46 hits and 29 ricochets. Almost everything else was an overpen or shatter. Maybe I'm too far away or something, but I could not get the shells to go through.

I spent my evening last night playing the Cleveland and Gascogne, and Gascogne sets fires more reliably which is a bit daft. I also got a guy to join me in a training room and test an AP Gascogne vs a HE Gascogne. I got multiple citadel hits with AP but after 2 fires i used damage control, shortly after 4 fires were burning. It was close but the fire proved too much.
Gascogne seems to be a mini Conqueror. I scoured youtube and Flamu disagrees but doesn't seem to have tried it, NoZoupForYou uploaded a HE vid and set 13 fires even when shooting fleeing ships at near 30km range. I'm setting 10 or more every game. Spamming HE is regarded as a dick move but got to be honest guys this ship seems to be built for it so going to do it (unless i'm at 10km or less) Sorry.

I don't blame you for using HE. The AP looks like it's difficult to use reliably as all the reviews point to it over penetrating constantly. If HE produces more consistent results, then shoot HE.

True, the typical AP salvo scores 1 pen, a couple of over pens and 5 bounces or shatters. If you can get the broadside of a BB or heavy cruiser at round 10k or less then it will citadel them and cause alot of damage, but in general with AP it is a shotgun. Get really close, blast them and hope the secondaries set fires. It can be devastating but it's a very high risk high reward playstyle and whilst i excel at that on WOT, my skill level simply isn't there yet on WOWS. The HE however is ridiculous. Every salvo seems to start a fire, and i burned down a Montana who had similar hp to me at the time but 2 salvos and 4 fires later its hp was no existent. It's often setting 2 ships on fire per salvo, as alot of the time i have the forward turret shoot a target and the aft turret shoot a different 1 when there's lots of ships around so that i'm still maximizing shots per minute without having to over angle and expose my side (i rarely fire both turrets at once, alot of the time when 1 is ready to fire the other is half way through a reload). This shows what the HE is like and i'm not sure if he even has the captain set up for HE (i do..)

That's ridiculous. I suppose you're using IFHE and demolition expert. Just demo, IFHE lower fire chance by 3%, and whilst it means the shells get more pen, i didn't want to lower the fire chance and went with the skill that extends my secondaries range for my 4 point skill, so she has just under 40% fire chance on the main guns and 10km range on the secondaries which also start a daft amount of fires. I might add IFHE next though and see what kind of damage numbers she puts up, training the crew is easy as she gets extra xp atm.

All the high tier French battleships look like they benefit greatly from a secondary build. I'm running AA on Lyon, but I'll switch to secondary on Richelieu.

The dispersion is pretty awful, but around 11-12km, it can be devastating. The trade off is that you have to show almost a flat broadside to bring all 16 guns to bear due to some poor firing angles. The guns are only 340mm with slower velocity on the AP, so you don't suffer as many over penetrations on cruisers. The secondaries aren't very good but the AA is solid. It's a fun ship for the most part, you just have accept that you'll be trolled pretty hard at long ranges. Edit: I should add that it's a champ in the Hermes scenario. If you hang at the rear of the formation you'll never be targeted. The bots will sail in to around 8km and you can just rain destruction on them. With no economic signals or camo I was earning 5000 XP and 200,000 credits.

I had to take the Gascogne out of my usual comfort zone of co-op and into randoms to get ribbons and it turns out that she sets even more fires against randoms, those Yamato's are too big to miss (Formula i didn't have time to upload the pic on the PC ) Damage isn't an amazing amount i know, pic is for the fires.

Turns out i didn't have the extra fire chance signals equipped, thought i did but that was De grasse so Gascogne's fire chance is now even better, should be fun.

Just finished the campaign to get the maid of new orleans camo, Gascogne looks amazing now. Got a mission for the Bretagne with it, added bonus.
