Was his record really "clean" though? I mean, the FBI got tipped off about him last month, surely that should have warranted some sort of action.

The FBI dropped the ball multiple times during their "investigation" into his actions. They did nothing. Even after hearing he was wanting to commit mass murder and had access to multiple firearms. They did nothing. But this is all Trump's fault.

Never said you did say it was, I'm just mirroring the typical response in the media now. "Better" background checks will do absolutely nothing. The kid in FL passed all of his background checks. Background checks are especially worthless if gov't agencies don't report what they are supposed to report to NICS. Like the church shooter in TX, he was supposed to be barred from purchasing firearms, but he was never reported. The kid in FL should've been flagged for his multiple reports to the FBI about wanting to commit mass murder.... Well, we see how that went. But please, add more bullshit that won't be effective. I'm sure it'll work next time. Oh wait... I forgot, what was the % of people charged for lying on their 4473 (Form you fill out for purchasing firearms)? Was it even double digits? Hmm. Seems like maybe enforcing the current laws, strictly and consistently, would work better than just making more laws that won't be enforced anyway. Oh, and dealing with these fucking psychos when they show dozens of red flags prior to their mass murders.

Back to the point. A law is only as good as its enforcement. If you make a law but don't enforce it, what's the point in the law in the first place?

And in the end it will always come down to money.

Was it even double digits? Hmm. Seems like maybe enforcing the current laws, strictly and consistently, would work better than just making more laws that won't be enforced anyway. Oh, and dealing with these fucking psychos when they show dozens of red flags prior to their mass murders. According to the DOJ IG there was a 0.04 percent prosecution rate from 2008-2015 for those caught lying on their Form 4473. So not even single digits.
Additionally, Investigators found that in six background checks they examined, the FBI determined that the person attempting to purchase a firearm was prohibited from doing so but didn't inform the store processing the purchase for up to seven months. In another 59 cases, investigators say the FBI approved people who should have been denied.
Maybe we need to enforce the laws already in place before passing all kinds of "feel good" shit to no effect.

I think it sounds like the vast majority of us are in favor of the FBI actually getting off their asses and doing their jobs
