I think your issue is your blinded by national pride. With all due respect the British were hardly the greatest empire in history. Well I'm going to have to disagree. It was the largest empire in history, and its influence is seen today in various aspects of life in almost all of North America, and half of Africa and Asia. The legal system, democracy, the English language, architecture, infrastructure, and dozens of other things, and it's still bonded together through the Commonwealth. Have to disagree, although I will give you the English language. But to be fair Americans did improve it lol. Most of the other things you mentioned are from other empires that the British simply adopted. IIRC England did not even change to a democracy until the 1850's.

Most of the other things you mentioned are from other empires that the British simply adopted. IIRC England did not even change to a democracy until the 1850's. Psst... Magna Carta. This sounds like Southern Baptists arguing tenets of faith with Calvary Baptists. The PAX Americana stands squarely on the the shoulders of the UK as it does upon the shoulders of the Roman Empire. Like it or not UK & USA are joined at the hip; national pride be damned. And the language of the car commercial only identifies clearly a minority target market. Our ties to the UK are so strong as to be indistinguishable except in a blank on the passport. While we banter about the idiosyncrasies of our national perspectives, the transnational corporations are quietly making the system of nation-states irrelevant. They are thrilled to see us quibbling. They are thrilled to see us fracturing into hidebound ideological special interest groups and fostering social confrontations based on fallacious concepts of evil threats and hate. They're happy to see us squander our conscious thoughts on reactive fear rather than objective search for truth and common purpose. I've enjoyed this thread because of the self-effacing humor that can be found in the many historical anecdotes poking at the British stiff upper lip. It would be even better if the Yanks could play one-upsmanships with the American soap opera, and maybe suck in some of our Scottish and Canadian members.

True, but tell me again who was it written by? Britain like most long lasting nations has made its contributions, but acting like they are the only ones is a bit silly.

Well it was first drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the official later version was drawn up by the Archbishop, King John, and his barons. I'm not saying it's the only Empire to have made contributions, but it's probably the one that's made the most far-reaching contributions.
