I'm going to start at tier 5, as tbh i free xp'd to the KV-1 the day the Soviet tanks were released and didn't use the tier 1-4 tanks.
KV-1: A good heavy tank, with decent armour but mobility isn't great. With use of angling and sidescraping it will turn into a fortress within its tier, but be wary of people shooting the turret as people prem spam it. Regarding guns i went with the 122mm and fired HEAT, because it means you can 1 or 2 shot most tanks, however gun handling is awful so you NEED to be frontline. For equipment i went with rammer, gld, and vents.
KV-1S: this was still a tier 6 when i used it and i haven't used it since, however if it plays the same, then you want to be near frontline using the 122mm gun but NOT trying to use armour to bounce shells. Instead you want to find a bit of cover near frontline engagements, and use peek-a-boom tactics, which is where you basically hide beind cover (not at the back of the map!) ideally wait for an enemy to fire or be distracted, then pop out, smack them for 390 alpha and get straight back in cover. Rinse and repeat. Use sidescraping when going to take a shot if it's likely enemies will shoot you. For equipment, i used rammer, gld and vents.
KV-85: Same as above^.
IS: Same as above, top tier your armour can bounce some tier 5 and 6s, but don't count on it. For equipment, rammer, gld and vents.
IS-3. Same as above when bottom tier, except you now have armour and can brawl against tanks that don't have high penetration guns. The hull armour looks quite distictive due to the pike nose. Due to this, angling like you did with the previous tanks is a bad idea, if caught in the open you want to point the hull straight at the enemy, and close range to make shots at the lower plate harder. The IS-3 has amazing side armour, so sidescraping is great, providing you are careful (that pike nose will work against you if you reverse to far). Reverse sidescraping (same principle as normal, except park the back of tank near the wall, swing the gun around so you're aiming over the back and sidescrape that way) is extremely effective with the IS-3 as the pike nose isn't a problem and due to the front mounted turret you don't have to expose much of the tank. Things to bear in mind are the weak spot on the roof of the turret (large rectangular hatch) and weak ammo rack. Train safe stowage asap. For equipment, i used rammer, vert stab and vents.
IS-8: this is a support heavy. The hull armour has worse angling than the IS-3 so despite being thicker, it isn't any better, and tier 9 and 10s punch through it. The tank is fast though, and once upgraded (it's a long and painful grind) it gets a great gun. Sidescraping it still worth doing, other than that, forget about using armour. You use this tank to support other heavies, let them bounce shots, with you taking shots during enemy reloads etc. The gun is fairly accurate so when heavily bottom tier support from the second line instead of the frontline. The ammo rack explodes if people sneeze at the tank, so i hope you got safe stowage. For equipment, i went with rammer, vert stab and vents, although if you explode a lot, swap vents with wet ammo rack.
IS-7: this is a monster. It gets far better armour than the IS-8 and the turret is near impenetrable frontally to everything except some tier X TD shells. The mobility is decent too. However the gun is a bit of a let down after the IS-8s gun, as the handling, pen, and accuracy are bad. Alot of IS-7s can be seen firing APCR, this is because, whilst the standard pen of 250mm on AP isn't awful, due to the gun handling it isn't reliable against other heavies, and APCR solves this. So if you currently have an IS-7 and aren't enjoying it, try loading a few more premium shells and then the tank really packs a punch. Regards gameplay, hull down (it's the best hull down tank in the game) and sidescraping are the best things to do, and brawl isolated targets. Always be frontline, the IS-7 is built for it and will troll you when engaging at range. Again, the ammo rack is weak, and prone to detonation if you let a Jageroo shoot your pike nose. For equipment, i went with rammer, gld and vert stab as the gun control needs all the help it can get.
Hope this has been a bit helpful. Another thing to bear in mind is that the line has poor gun depression so don't ridgefight.
